Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 192 0.
To azzwtoa; smug comm: j y i Beit rows haw,Jnmsiozamsmcsa, a citize'ii ofthe United States: of America, and a resident. of Beloit, county of Rock, and State ofWisconsin, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention'are to provide an improved former sanitary drinking fountain, having" an improved form and s m h ttlhs a el's p ly o s an an improved form of splash-board for preventing the water from splashing overthe sides of th'e'bowl. v
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shownin the accompanying drawings, ni'whim Figure 1 is a front elevation of the fountain.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation taken from the ri ht of Fig. 1.
*ig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Flg. 1.
In the form shown, bowl 1 is provlded with a drain 3 guarded by a strainer in the form of an inverted cup 4 which is secured to the bowl by a central screw 5. The water jet orifice 6 is located at the front of the bowl and may be flush with the wall thereof. The supply nozzle may be formed by an upwardly inclined bore 7 closed .at its lower end by a plug 8. A vertical bore 9 connected with the water supply pipe 10 meets the bore 7 at an angle near the orifice 6. The supply pipe 10 is provided with a suitable valve 11. The peculiar arrangement of the bores 7 and 9 causes the water, which passes therethrough, to form a jet directed rearwardly and upwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig; 3, so that a person may obtain a drink without bringing his lips into contact with anything but the water.
To prevent contamination of the supply nozzle orifice, an inwardly extending guard flange 12 is integrally formed on the front wall of the bowl directly above the orifice 6 where it will be clear of the jet, as shown in Fig. 3. This guard prevents dirt or drippings of water from the drinkers mouth from falling into or upon the rim of the orifice 6.
The splash-board 2 which constitutes the back of the fountain, is formed integrally with the bowl and is provided with apertures 13, to receive bolts or other suitable fastening means for securing the fountain to awaljl; V v
The front face of the splash-board is formed to provide a recess 14; which drains into the bowl and is of suflicient area to cover the range of the jet under various pressures. A wire net screen 15 is secured across the front of therecess 14: so as to break the force of the jet withoutsplashing, and cause the water to be collected and drained into the bowl. v j
The lower end'of the back 2 extends downwardly td form therear'wall of a housing 16 which is'integral with the bowl and which communicates therewith through the discharge opening 17 at the'rear of the housingconnects to the'waste pipe18. A partition 19"eirtends"upwardly from the bottom of the housing and a partition 20 projects downwardly from the bottom of the bowl so as to form a trap for water in order to prevent sewer gas from escaping from the waste pipe 18.
When the control valve 11 is open, the jet of water from the nozzle will, under normal conditions, be directed over and into the bowl -following a path indicated by the dotted line 19, Fig. 3. If the pressure of the water supply is subject to fluctuation, as
is usually the case, the jet will at times of 7 increased pressure, he directed against the back 2 where it will be caught by the screen 15 and prevented from splashing upon the floor. The water which passes through the screen will run down through the chamber 14; into the bowl.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims,
I claim j 1. A drinking fountain comprising a bowl having a splash-board at one side, a nozzle for directing a jet of water above said bowl in the direction of said splash-board, and means on said splash-board adapted to break up a jet of water striking it and prevent the same from splashing over the edges of said bowl.
2. A drinking fountain comprising abowl having a s lash-board at one side, a nozzle for directing a jet of water above said bowl in the direction of said splash-board, and a foraniinous wall associated with said splash-board adapted to break up a jet of water striking it and prevent the same-from splashing over the edges of said bowl.
3. A drinking fountain comprising a bowl having a splash-board at one side, a nozzle for directing a jet of water above said bowl in the direction of said splash-board, and a wire mesh screen secured across the face of said splash-board whereby a jet of water directed against the splash-board is prevented from splashing over the edges of said bowl.
l. A drinking "fountain comprisingabowl having a splash-board disposed in a vertical position so as to form the back of said fountain, a water supply nozzle at the for-.
ward par-t of said bowl for directing a jet of water toward said back, the face of said back having a recess therein, and a screen secured across the face of said back, said screen being substantially coextensive with said recess so as to form abroad shallow chamber between said screen and splashboard whereby a jet of water striking the splash-board will be collected and conducted into said bowl without splashing;
5. A drinking fountain comprising a bowl having a drain formed in the bottom thereof, a splash-board on said bowl and forming the back of said fountain, a nozzle in the said housinghaving a discharge outlet 10- cated at the opposite end thereof, and a pair of vertically disposed partitions mounted in spaced relation between said drain and outlet opening, one of said partitions extending downwardly from said bowl, the other of said partitions extending upwardly from the bottom of said housing so as to form a trap for the water passing through said drain. 7 j Signed at Chicago this 3rd day of March, 1920. j
