Description

W. J. BENN.
TAHILL-COUPLING.
No.176,583. Patented April 25, 18.76.
I T'YTNESSES %WM .4 H mm eya Q.A.W
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. BENN, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [76,583, dated April 25, 1876; application filed March 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. J. BENN, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Thill- Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a th-ill-coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views of parts thereof.
A represents an ordinary axle-clip, on the front of which is formed a circular box, B, open at both ends, and provided with a slot or opening, a, at the top. 0 represents the thill-iron, the rear end of which is enlarged and formed with an opening,'b, leaving a cross-bar, d, at the extreme end. Around this cross-bar is placed a rubber sleeve or packing, D, as shown, to fit within the circular box B; The thill-iron is held in a perpendicular position, and movedsidewise into the box through the slota, when it can be turned down, the box passing through the opening b in the iron.
The rubber sleeve or packing D prevents all rattling, and this sleeve may be placed in the box, in which case it is to have a slot corresponding with the slot at in the box, and the thill-iron be moved into the same.
The thill-iron cannot be removed except when it is raised perpendicularly, and the thills may be held in this position by moving them slightly to either side, or until either arm of the thill-iron gets within the slot at. As additional security to prevent the thills becoming disengaged I use a pivoted latch, G, on each side of the box B, to close the ends of the slot a. These latches may be sunk into the ends of the box, or the opening (2 in the thill-iron be large enough for the ends of the latches to pass through.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the slotted box B, the thill-iron 0, having the surrounding rubber sleeve D and the independent side latches, connected to the box and arms of the thilliron, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of February, 1876.
WM. J. BENN.
