Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in combined toy and advertising device,'and one of the objects of the same is to provide improved means for stimulating the use of a commodity container 5 as a part of a sectional toy construction, and through the medium thereof to also serve as an advertising means by reason of the constant display of the container when the toy is being assembled or used.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this character of a collapsible or knockdown construction, the parts being adapted to be assembled to produce the toy or final product, whether there is any of the commodity in the container or not.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention and in which Figure l is a side elevation of a device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and showing the parts assembled.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the parts separated, some of the parts being in elevation and some being partly in section.

Figure 3 is a top plan View of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a view of the blank constituting one of the end members or sections, before the same is folded to shape.

Figure 5 is a view of the blank of the other end member or section before it is folded to shape.

Figure 6 is a detail perspective View of a portion of the container engaging portion of one of the end members.

While in the present exemplification, the invention is shown and described as constituting an animal structure, such as a lion, it is to be understood that the invention is adapted to produce any type of final product wherein the commodity con- 45 tainer constitutes the body or torso, to the ex-- tremities of which the end members or sections are detachably connected to cooperate with the body portion. Therefore the term animal as employed in the specification and claims is not to be considered as a term of limitation, butis to be construed broadly to include any form of final product which is composed of the parts or sections constituting this invention.

Referring more particularly-to the drawings, the numeral l0 designates a commodity container,

here shown in the form of a can or hollow cylindrical body provided with the usual ends, in one of which holes or apertures may be provided in the usual'manner, by perforating the same, and through which openings the contents of the container may be distributed or sifted.

In the present exemplification of the invention the ends of the container it are shaped to form ridges I I and the container may be of any desired size, length and configuration.

In Figure 5 of the drawings there is shown a blank which is shaped to form two sections l2 delineating the head 53; shoulders 34 and front legs or limbs I5 of a lion. The two sections are connected together by means of a connecting member [6, the blank beingscored or partially out along the lines ii; the two sections being separated and below the end of the connecting member IS the blank is cut away as at 8 to form a re-' cess, one wall being constituted by the lower edge of the, member IS. The lower edges l9 of the recesses l8 preferably incline upwardly from points adjacent the cut or. scored portion H toward the center of the connecting piece it and terminate short of each other.

Similarly, the blank is cutaway as at 20 along the upper end of the connecting piece it, and which end forms one wall of the recess 20. The other wall 2i of the recess 23 is inclined downwardly from points in proximity to the cut or scored line I! towards and terminating short of each other. A portion of the blank between the end of the recess 18 and the out or scored portion I 1 may beshaped to form shoulders 22.

In Figured there is shown a blank from which the rear section or hind portion of the animal is shaped, and this blank is shaped to form two sections 23, portionsof which have the contour of the rear legs or limbs 2% of the animal and the tall 25. These sections 23 are connected together by means of an intermediate member 25 and the blank is scored or out along the lines 21, similar to the blank shown in Figure 5.

Each of the sections 23 is cut away as at 28 adjacent the top edge of theconnecting member 26 and which edge constitutes one of the walls of the recess formed by the cut away portion while the other walls 29 of the cut away portion incline downwardly and inwardly toward but terminate short of each other.

Similarly, the blank is cut away as at 30 adjaupwardly as at 3| and terminate short of each other. Portions of the wall of the recess 30 may be shaped to form shoulders 32, and similarly portions of the wall 29 of the recess '23 may be shaped to form shoulders 33.

In use, the blank, constituting the sections l2 shown in Figure 5, are bent toward each other along the cut or scored lines I1, as shown more clearly in Figure 6, and if desired, the forward edges of the sections I2 may bebrought into contact so as to hold the openings formed by the walls 20 and I9 of the recesses 2| and I8 in proper position to receive one end of, the container l0, after which the forward edges of the sections l2 may be separated toassume the position shown in Figure 3, thereby causing the sections l2 to be substantially parallel with each other, the inclined walls l9 and 2|. engaging j over the rim or flange ll of. the container. , Similarly, the blank shown in Figure 4'may be folded along the scored or cut lines 21 to position the sections 23' so that the recesses formed by the walls 29 and 3| and the connecting member 26 will receive the other end of the container. ' The connecting member 26 will be disposedin proximity to the other end of the container and the sections 23 will be held substantially parallel so that the legs or limbs 24 being separated will rest upon a support and cooperate with the legs or limbs I5 to hold the completed structure in an assembled position.

Q It will, be manifest that with this improved construction a very interesting, instructive and amusing toy will result, and by reason of the' formation of the separate elements which 00- operate with each other, there will be produced a knock-down or collapsible structure.

When the parts are all assembled, it will be manifest that the advertising matter contained on the wrapper of the container will always be within the scope of the claims, without depart' ing from the spirit of this invention.

What is claimed as new is:- r

1. A combined toy and advertising device of sectional construction embodying a .body comprising a commodity container, separate end members of predetermined configuration, and interengaging means between the'end members and the respective ends of said container for detachably securing the end members to the container, whereby said container will constitute the body or torso of the completed structure, the'said interengaging means embodying spaced projections on the end members, engaging over the faces of said projections which engage over said edges, inclining upwardly from the extremityof V the respective projections.

A device of the character described comprising a member comparatively long with reedgeof the proximate end of the container, the I V I spect to its cross sectional diameter, end members separate therefrom, one of said end members being shaped to' forma head, shoulder and front leg, of an animal, the other section being shaped to form the rump, rear leg and tail of the animal,

and means for detachablyand separately securing said sections to the respective ends of said memberwhereby the assembled structure will delin eate a complete animal, each of said sections embodying laterally spaced portions and a connecting stripor element therebetween, which latter 7 when the ends are secured to said member will stand adjacent and extend across the proximate end of said member, said connecting 'strip serving as a fulcrum about which the said portions swing when the edgesof the said portions are moved toward and away from each other.

3. A product of the character described comprising an element constituting a portion of a with a'commodity container, and means for detachably securing said portion to the container, whereby the container will constitute the body or torso of the assembled structure, said portion being formed from a blank cut to form complementary sections joined by an intermediate portion, along opposite'edges of which portion the said sections are adapted to be folded to be substantially parallel and spaced, portions of the edges'of the sections adjacent the ,lines of fold being shaped to provide spaced laterally projecting and co-operating shoulders adapted to engage opposite portions of an adjacent end of the container providing an anchor to the container.

4. A blank from which an end portion of a structure delineating an animal may be formed,

said blank comprising complementary sections,

portions of the proximate edges of the sections being connected by a portionof the blank of substantial area, said blank being. severed along the ends of said connecting portion to form spaced cooperating shoulders when the blank is folded and between which shoulders the end of a body member is adapted to be positioned, said blank being also weakened along the edges of said connecting portion between said shoulders, said blank predetermined figure or object, in combination 7 being adapted to be folded along said weakened cause the shoulders on the two sections to be.

moved towards each other to engage over the end of the said container to detachably secure the parts in assembled relation.

5. An article of the character described embodying a body, an end element attachable to and detachable from said body, said element defining the extremity of an image of which said body constitutes a part, said end element comprising laterally spaced members hingedly connected together adjacent one edge, whereby said members at said edge will be maintained spaced, and the opposite edges will be adapted to be moved toward and away from each other, and co-operating shoulders on each of said members at their connected edges for receiving and holding one end of said body therebetween.
