1 This invention relates to lavatory equipment, and "more particularly to a shelf for a lavatory having embodied within its structure a soap dispensing mechanism.

It is an object of this inventio to provide a combined soap dispenser and shelf for a lavatory which as a shelf will be firm and solid to.support a glass or other toilet accessary, but which at the same time will serve'as acontainer and dispenser of liquid soap. v

It is a further object to provide a combined soap dispenser and shelf fora lavatory which is easily installed and easily removable from its place for cleaning or other purposes,'but which when installed will be firm and rigid and which may be easily opened to renew the soap supply, and yet which may be fastened in a similar manner to prevent tampering by unauthorized persons.

It is a further object to provide a dispenser of the type described which will at all times indicate whether the tank is full or empty. The invention accordingly comprises a device possessing the features, properties and the relation' of elements which will be exemplifiedin' the article hereinafter described and'the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

In the drawings, the numeral l designates a substantially rectangular container having a cover 2, the container being braced by a plurality of diagonally extendin strips 3, which at their upper ends are united to the back wall of the container at 4 and serve as a means for attachmentas will be described. Strip 6 is attached to the bottom of the container to provide a downwardly extending edge 1.

To insert the container in place, the projecting edge '1 is slipped into the channel l0 and then screws 12 pass through the'upper end of brace 3 and of the container at 4 into threaded openings in the plate 8. The upper front edge of the container l is rolledover as shown at 2B and cover 2 has its front edge rolledover in a half circle 2| so that when the cover is in position and with its rear edge snug against the wall, the rolled over por-' tion 2| will encircle the roll 20, and hold the front edge of the cover in place.

Means are provided to hold the cover in place and prevent it from sliding forward sufiiciently to release the front edge. As shown in Fig. 5, there is attached to the under side of the cover a spring plate '22 having an upstanding finger 23 in position to enter into an opening 24 in the bottom'of the offset portion II.

The long edge of the cover 2, adjacent to the wall, is provided with an offset 25 extending upwards and rearwards, having an inclined surface 26 with the ends tapered at 21, and blended into the cover proper. The multiple purpose of this offset is to provide a housing for the gage or supply indicator and latch mechanism, to reinforce' the cover, to conceal installationscrews andto form a deflector of water, etc. from the wall,

Mounted upon the inclined surface 26 is a rotary stud 30' having an opening in its front face 3| in which a key may be inserted and having upon its rear face an eccentric 32 which may be turned'to the point where it will depress the plate 22 sufficient to free the finger 23 from the opening in the offset I l.

Mounted upon the front edge of the container is a pair of dispensing apparatus each comprising a base 38 within which there operates a plunger 31. The exact form of this dispensing mechanism does not form part of the present invention. For the purpose of this invention, it is enough to state that the dispenser is such that when the plunger is pushed inwardly, lather is discharged through an opening 39. Soap is supplied to the dispenser through a tube 40.

In order to make visible from the exterior the amount of soap contained in the container, there is pivoted at 49 within the container, an L- shaped lever 50 having a substantially horizontally extending arm 5| upon which is mounted a float 52. The other arm of this lever has an arcuate dial as shown at 53, on one end of which is marked the word Empty, and on the other end, Full. This lever is so mounted that one or the other of the words will exhibit itself behind an opening 55 in the front face '26 of the top. When the container is filled, the float will rise to the point of bringing the word Full opposite this opening 55, and correspondingly when the container is empty the lever will present the word Empty before this opening.

With this construction, it will be clear that this device serves. both as a shelf such as is customarily desired above a lavatory and at the same time, without obtrusive apparatus, serves to supply lather ready for use. Moreover, by reason of the fact that the bracing is contained within the soap container, the container itself may be of light metal and yet by its construction and bracing gives unusual strength and rigidity to the shelf. This same rigidity and strength, moreover, makes it possible to fill the container with liquid soap without danger of it being spilled by jarring out of the container.

Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made Without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of thegeneric and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim:

, 1. A combined shelf and receptacle comprising a bracket attachable to a- Wall, having an opening therein, a receptacle body screwed to said bracket, a top fitting over said body having a front edge interlocking with a front face of said body and extending backward. to cover said bracket, a latch attached to the underface of said cover engaging said opening for holding. said cover in place, means operable fromabove said top for releasing said latch.

2. A combined shelf and receptacle comprising a bracket attachable to a wall, having an opening therein, a receptacle body screwed to said. bracket, a top fitting over said body having a front edge interlocking with a front face of said body and extending backward to cover said bracket, a latch attached to the underface of said cover engaging said opening for holding said cover in place, means operable from above said top for releasing said latch, said top having the rear portion of its top inclined upwardly toward theback.

3. A combined shelf and. receptacle comprising a bracket attachable to a wall, having an open top socket at its lower edge and a recess near its top, a receptacle body having a flange fitting within said socket and its upper edge screwed to said bracket, a top fitting over said body having a front edge interlocking with a front face of said body and extending backwardly to cover said bracket, a latch attached to the underface of said cover engaging said recess for holding said cover in place, and means operable from above said top for releasing said latch.

4. A combined shelf and receptacle comprising a bracket attachable to a wall, having an open top socket at its lower edge and a recess near its top, a receptacle body having a flangefitting withinsaid socket and its upper edge screwed to said bracket, a top fitting over said body having a front edge interlocking with a front face of said body and extending backwardly to cover said bracket, a latch attached to the underface of said cover engaging said recess for holding said cover in place, and means operable from above said top for releasing said latch, said top having the rear portion of its top inclined upwardly toward the back.
