A TTOHNEXS WITNESSES:
E NQRRIS pnzns ca, Pnc'mumu, WASNXNGTOM u p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. FREUND, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOAT PROPELLlNG-G EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,203, dated April 30, 1901.
Application filed August :7, 1900. Serial No. 26,147. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. FREUND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brook1yn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boat Propelling-Gear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a boat driving-gear operated by the arms of the boatman, and comprising a peculiarly-arranged propellershaft held beneath the bottom of the boat and fitted with a propeller for driving the boat in the novel manner to be set forth hereinafter.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of theinvention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the hand-cranks and the parts immediately connected therewith.
a represents a boat, which may be of any build, either round or flat bottomed and with an after-body of any desired material. Mounted on the bottom of the boat is a pipe or tube 19, which stands vertically and carries a head a, strengthened by braces d, running to the bottom of the boat. This head a sustains a case or housing a, and it also has pedestalbearings f for a shaft g, that is mounted to turn in the bearings and provided with handcranks h, by which it may be operated. The shaft 9' carries a bevel-gear g, which meshes with a similar gear 11', attached to a shaft 7 which passes down through the tube 1) and through the bottom of the boat, as shown in Fig. 1. The lowerend of the shaft 4; is stepped in a bearing is, which is fastened to the bottom of the boat by means of a bracket at its front end and an arm k at its rear end. Between the bracket is and arm 10 is located a bevel-gear 2' which is fastened to the shaft t' and meshes with a similar gear Z, fastened to the propeller-shaft Z. This shaft is mounted in the arm 10 and in a bracket m, attached to the rear of the boat and serving the function of a stern-post. The propeller-shaft extends horizontally outside of and beneath the bottom and has a propeller n of any desired form fastened to its rear end. A guard o is attached to the rear end of the bearing k and to the lower end of the bracket 'm, the guard extending rearward beyond this bracket and carrying the heel of the rudder 19. The guard o is strengthened at its middle by a brace 0, attached thereto and to the bottom of the boat.
By means of this gearing the power of the boatman may be applied very effectively to the propeller and the space within the boat is not taken up by the machinery, so that the boat has the same carrying power and the same room as those adapted to be propelled by the usual oars. The parts k, 7.0, and o effectively protect the working parts and prevent them from being injured by contact with the earth or other obstructions to be met with in operating the boat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a marine vessel, of a tube or trunk standing on the bottom thereof and communicating with'an opening in the bottom, a shaft extending through the tube and below the bottom of the body,means at the upper end of the tube for driving the shaft, a propeller-shaft geared with the firstnamed shaft and extending horizontally along the bottom of the vessel, and devices fastened to the bottom of the vessel and forming a step-bearing for the vertical shaft and side bearings for the propeller-shaft, such bearing devices comprising a guard passing below the propeller-shaft to protect the same.
2. The combination with a marine vessel, of a vertical tube or trunk mounted therein andv communicating with an opening in its bottom, a shaft mounted to turn in the tube "and extending below the bottom of the vessel, gearing for driving the shaft, a bracket fastened to the bottom of the vessel forward of the shaft, 2. step-bearing for the lower end of the shaft, such step-bearing being fastened to the bracket,a guard fastened to the bracket and projecting rearward to the stern of the Vessel, a. stern-bracket projecting downward name to this specification in the presence of from the stern of the vessel and fastened to two subscribing Witnesses.
the ward at propeller-shaft mounted in a part of the said step-bearing andin the stern- JOHN FREUND' 5 bracket, and. gearing for connecting the first- Witnesses:
named shaft with the propeller-shaft. I. B. OWENS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my EVERARD BOLTON MARSHALL.
