PORTABLE DISPLAY CASE AND BINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. KNAU- BER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Display Cases and Binders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which. form a part of this specification.
My invention relates in general to portable display cases, and more particularly to hold ers for facilitating the carrying and exhibiting of samples of wall paper.
It is customary for the manufacturers of wall paper to bind together sample sheets of different colors and designs. The sample sheets, in order that the designs may be shown, are of such a size that the sample books are heavy and inconvenient to carry. The books are usualy rolled so that they may be more easily carried which not only curls up the sheets so as to make their display difficult, but also soon results in their being broken and soiled. The sample books are ordinarily displayed fiat, owing to the difficulty of holding them upright. The appearance the paper will have when hung can not therefore be accurately judged.
The primary object of my inventlon is to provide a holder for wall paper samples, by means of which a large number of sheets may be easily carried and readily supported in an upright position for inspection.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holder for wall paper samples which will be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and eflicient in use.
My invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings with which the same is illustrated in two convenient and practical forms, and in which,-

Similar reference characters are used to designate the similar parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, reference characters A and A designate angular corner plates between which the upper ends of a plurality of sheets of material, such as wall paper samples, are secured. Any suitable fastening device, such as bolts a maybe employed for securing the sheets of material between the corner plates. The bolts extend through registered openings in the corner plates and interposed sheets. Any number of sheets may be secured between the corner plates, it being merely necessary to employ bolts of lengths corresponding to the number of sheets secured between the plates.
The plate A is provided with cars a which may be conveniently formed by bending upwardly portions of the metal of which the plate is made. A handle 13, of any suitable construction, is secured to the ears a to facilitate the carrying of the device. The plate A may also be provided with ears such as a through which rings B pass to afford means for attaching a shoulder strap to the device to aid in carrying the same.
Reference characters C and 0 indicate frames pivotally connected to the plates A and A The frames may conveniently consist in wire bales the upper ends of which extend through openings in the ends of the respective plates A and A The upper portions of each bale are spaced apart a distance slightly wider than the width of the sheets of material A. Each bale is bent to form shoulders 0 and c which overlie the sheets of material, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The portions of each bale extending below the shoulders are united by an integral portion O projecting below the lower edges of the samples. The lower portion C of each bale is preferably surrounded by short sections of tubing 0. Strips D, and D are secured to the bales near the lower endsthereof. Such strips may be conveniently secured to the bales by bending eyes cl around the portions of the bales, thereby permitting the strips to be adjusted so as to overlie the samples near the lower ends thereof. The portions C of the bales which extend below the samples are united by any suitable fastening device such as indicated by reference letter F, which is made of wire, having its ends f, bent around one of the bales and a bent portion f adapted to removably engage the other bale, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
E indicates a pocket secured to. one of the bales in any suitable manner as for instance, by having portions 6 at the sides thereof bent around the parallel portions of the halo. The pocket E is adapted to contain catalogues or small samples.
In Figs. 6 to 10 I have illustrated a modified form of my invention in which a central support G is provided, to the opposite sides of which sheets G and G are secured and to the upper edge of which the bales L and L are pivoted. Brackets H and H are secured to the top of the central support G and are formed with sockets to receive the inturned upper ends of the bales. The brackets may be conveniently constructed of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 9, so bent as to overlie the upper end of the central support, and be secured thereto by screws or rivets.
H indicates a handle, the lower ends it of which are secured to the central support G by means of screws, as shown in Fig. 10.
Each of the bales L and L is bent to form offset portions Z and Z to overlie the outer sheets of the samples. The bales are bent to form lower portions L extending below the lower edges of the sheets. Any suitable fastening device, such as indicated in M is provided for detachably uniting the bales below the sheets in order to clamp the sheets between the bales. Sections of tubing Z preferably surround the lower portions L of the bales.
The manner of using and operation of my improved holder are as follows: hen it is desired to display the samples the bales are disconnected by disengaging the fastening device at the lower ends thereof. One of the bales is then swung upwardly and rearwardly so as to rest upon the floor or other supporting surface, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The sample sheets may then be suc cessively turned upwardly so that they may all be readily inspected. hen the samples are to be carried the bales are swung into the positions shown in Fig. 2, and clamped against the sample sheets by means of the fastening device.
The bales or frames C and C are resilient and consequently when either frame ',is swung upwardly, over, and to the rear of frame being securely held in position to support the sample sheets in an inclined position.-
The operation of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 to 10 is substantially the same as that of the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5, except that the strips 1) and D which overlie and surround the sheets at their lower ends, are dispensed with, the portions Z and Z serving to hold the lower edges of the sample sheets flat.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improved holder for sheets of material, such, for instance, as samples of wall paper, by means of which any number of sheets may be bound together to be carried and by means of which the sheets may be displayed in an upright position.
By the use of my invention it is not necessary that the sheets should be first bound to gether in book form as any number of them may be clamped between the binding plates of the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5, or may be secured to the opposite sides of the central support in the embodiment of my invention, shown in Figs. 6 to 10.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of frames arranged on opposite sides of the sheets, means for clamp ing said frames together, one of said frames belng in the form of a spring bale, and means for pivotally supporting said bale so as to permit it to be swung over and above the other frame and said sheets and to the rear thereof into position to support the sheets in an upright position.
2. I11 a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of frames on opposite sides of the sheets, one of said frames being in the form of a bale wider at one end than at the other, means for pivotally supporting said bale at its wider end so as to permit it to be swung over and above the other frame and said sheets into position to support the sheets in an upright position, and means for clamping the free end of said bale to the other frame so as to hold the sheets together.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of open frames on opposite sides of the sheets, means for clamping the sheets between said frames, and means for pivotally supporting one of said frames whereby it may be swung over and to the rear of said other frame and said sheets into position tosupport the sheets in an upright position.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of open frames on the opposite sides of said sheets, means for detachably uniting said frames to clamp the sheets between the same, and means for pivotally connecting one frame to the other whereby it is adapted to be swung over and to the rear of said other frame and said sheets to support the sheets in an upright position.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of bales, meansfor pivotally uniting said bales, means for detachably uniting said bales at their lower ends to clamp the sheets between the same, either of said bales adapted to be swung over and to the rear of the other frame to support the sheets in an upright position.
6. In a holder for carrying and displaying sheets of material, the combination with a pair of plates between which the upper edges of the sheets of material are adapted to be secured, a pair of open frames pivotally secured to said plates and adapted to overlie the sheets of material, means for clamping said frames against the interposed sheets and means for pivotally supporting one of said frames whereby it may be swung around and to the rear of the other frame to support the sheets in an upright position.
7. In a holder for carrying and displaying sheets ofmaterial, the combination with a pair of plates between which the sheets of material are adapted to be secured, a handle secured to one of said plates, a pair of bales pivotally connected at their upper ends to said plates, means secured to said bales for overlying the interposed sheets of material, means for detachably uniting the lower ends of said bales below the sheets, either of said bales adapted to be swung around and to the rear of the other bale to support the holder in an upright position.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of sheets of material, of a pair of resilient bales on the opposite sides of said sheets, means for detachably uniting said bales to clamp the sheets between the same, and means for pivotally supporting said bale whereby either of them may be swung around and to the rear of the other to support the sheets in an upright position.
