Abstract

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing a service to a User Equipment (UE) via a mobile communication network or a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). At the mobile communication network side, second information about the WLAN is obtained, the second information including a Service Set Identifier (SSID) of the WLAN; and a second message including the second information is sent to the UE via the mobile communication network. At the WLAN side, the second message is not advertised to the UE. At the UE side, the second message is received via the mobile communication network; a WLAN interface of the UE is turned on in response to the second message; and the WLAN is accessed using the second information via the WLAN interface. With the inventive solution, the access point of the WLAN will not advertise the SSID any longer to thereby improve the security, and the UE can obtain the SSID without turning on the WLAN interface always to thereby lower power consumption and prolong the lifetime of a battery. For example, the inventive solution can be applicable to a scenario where the WLAN is trusted, for example, deployed by an operator of the mobile communication network.
