Hans-Heinz Linder joined the Reichsmarine in 1933. He went through U-boat training from Nov 1939 to Aug 1940, and then commanded the small school boat U-18 from 3 Sept - 17 Dec 1940 (Busch & Röll, 1999). He joined U-96 (Kptlt. Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock) for U-boat Commander sea training from Jan to March 1941.
