It
is really a privilege to be born in Batticaloa, my home town.Batticaloa
is one of the big cities which is located in the east cost of Srilanka.It
is about 300 km from capital Colombo. It is known as the ‘Land of
singing fish’ from ancient times.
It is not an ordinary city but has a historical backround.The Dutch landed in this city and it had been the seat of Dutch for several years. The name ‘Batticaloa’ means the ‘kingdom of paddy’ in Dutch.
There are so many places in and around the city which are the star attraction for all Srilankan and foreigners. The ruin of Dutch kingdom, where the Kacheri is located

the records of ancient history is kept, the Kallady bridge, a gift from
the Dutch, passikudah beach, Ulle, Arugambe, Batticaloa Lake are some
of them.
Batticaloa has a racial diversity.Tamils, Muslims, and Burgers live together in harmony. Most of the people work in government sectors, some people are farmers, carpenters, and Fisher men…etc.Muslims do business. Most of the shops in Batticaloa are run by Muslims.
Batticaloa has a small town but so many villages around it. The country side is superior to town in many ways. The lush-green paddy fields, the vast meadows, cool breeze, grooves of trees, the lovely landscapes, farmers working in the fields, reaping crops, chirping of birds and sights at once elevating and cheerful. As People in Batti are near to nature, they are near to God.

Nowadays
as many people in the village move towards the town due to various purposes,
the town is becoming crowdy.Batticaloa met some drawbacks due to the civil
war in the past years. But after the peace come to the east, the development
process was undertaken at a high speed by the government. At present Batticaloa
town has wide roads, many new buildings, children parks, clock towers,
Shopping centers, Facilitaed teaching hospital, public market complex,
and public library….etc.
Public parks, municipal gardens add to the beauty of the city, they act as places of recreation and relaxation for the citizens. There are so many schools in the midst of the city doing a great job to the society.Im proud to say that I’m a Michaelian.

People
of Batti are blessed much because of their belief in God. There are so
many Hindu temples, churches, and the mosques in the city. Some are very
popular as having historical backround, such as Mamangam pillayar kovil.Kokaticholai
Shiva temple.
Everyone is interested and anxious to have a bird’s eye view of this beautiful city of Sri Lanka., indeed is a treasure-chest of antiquity. My hometown Batti is very embodiment of simplicity and a symbol of God’s bountifulness. I enjoy my life in my hometown as it provides tranquility, calmness and peace of mind.
