Testudo Radiata and Testudo Carbonaria Tortoise Lithographs

By J. D. C. Sowerby

20th c. Reproduction

These high-quality lithographic reproductions of Sowerby’s Testudo Radiata and Testudo Carbonaria are beautifully matted and framed. Originally produced by James de Carle Sowerby (1787-1871), these illustrations are wonderfully detailed and show a close study of nature. Sowerby, like his father, was a botanical artist with an affinity for illustrating nature. His accomplishments, however,  did not stop there; Sowerby was also a minerologist, chemist, and co-founder of the British Royal Botanic Society and Gardens.

The original lithographic plates were done by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850). Hullmandel set up his printing press in London in 1818 and went on to become one of the most prolific printmakers in all of England. He frequently experimented with lithography and invented a method of producing a gradation effect that allowed the production of dramatic landscape lithographs.

Condition: Prints are very good. Overall the colors are vibrant, the paper is healthy, and the mat is intact. Prints acquired framed and have not been unframed to check full condition. The frames are in good condition with some light wear. One corner has miters separating.
