Hendrik Kerstens
Biografie
Hendrik Kerstens (Den Haag, 1956)
Hendrik Kerstens (b.1956, The Hague) is an autodidact who decided in 1995 to dedicate himself entirely to photography. He is well--known for his documentation of the important moments in his daughter Paulas life, which earned him a Taylor Wessing Photographic Prize in 2008 from the National Portrait Gallery London. His portraits refer both to the Dutch masters and the those of the Italian Renaissance. He sees photography as a means of continuing the descriptive arts. The association with painting is emphasized by the sharpness of his photographs. Kerstens work has been exhibited in Amsterdam, Brussels, London, New York, Los Angeles and Latin America. His photographs are included in the collection of institutions such as the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and several well known private collections. Publications include American Photo Magazine and the cover of Domus and the New York Times Magazine. Kerstens continues to live and work in Amsterdam.
