About This Item

(The Hague, Historical Section of the Royal Netherlands Army, 1995). 8vo; original charcoal cloth gilt; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 149; maps and plans; full-colour plates. Dustwrapper a little sunned on spine; otherwise fine condition. "The words Je Maintiendrai, once the heraldic motto of William of Orange, now form part of the shoulder patch of the uniform of every soldier of the Royal Netherlands Army. As the title of this book, they symbolise not only the four centuries of the Netherlands Army's history that are treated, but also the close ties between the House of Orange-Nassau and the Army. The book begins with a description of the States Army (1568-1795). The Batavian and French periods are then reviewed, followed by the military history of the 19th century, the mobilization during 1914-1918 and the fighting in May 1940. Separate chapters are devoted to the history of fortifications in the Netherlands and the East Indies Army." .
