The Case Study of Vanitas was one of the most successful television anime adaptations in recent years, inspiring many readers to pick up the manga. Fans were dismayed, however, when the series was canceled just weeks after the second half of the first season concluded. So far, The Case Study of Vanitas closely paralleled the manga. There have been a few minor modifications to Season 1. Some aspects concerning Vanitas’ background and history have been removed entirely, which may become a major change in the future and also change his character traits as a whole.

Vanitas’s History Change in Anime and Manga

Vanitas is the main character of the manga series The Case Study of Vanitas. Vanitas of the Blue Moon was the character’s name, and he was a member of the Blue Moon clan with vampire skills. Vanitas’ past is shrouded in mystery. Vanitas was a young test subject at Doctor Moreau’s lab who was saved by the Vampire of the Blue Moon while infiltrating his lab. Vanitas has a flashback in the manga where he vows to murder all vampires, but he also has a flashback where he is taught by the Vampire of the Blue Moon, which saved their lives. While the anime depicts Vanitas’ rescue, it does not include Vanitas learning from the Vampire of the Blue Moon which changed the character’s trait in a big way in the anime.

Vanitas is a Parallel Character to Noé in the Anime

Vanitas’ relationship with Noé is very complicated. They have an odd relationship in which they are closest friends but frequently annoy each other. Vanitas is extremely contradictory around Noé, imploring the vampire to join him one minute and telling him to leave the next. Leaving out the flashbacks Vanitas witnessed has a significant impact on Vanitas’ background since, strangely, it makes him more similar to Noé. Both people have been rescued from awful conditions by a highly powerful teacher and are in some way or another following their teacher.
