A badly injured, purple coloured cat has thousands of people around the world offering to help after it was recently rescued by a California foundation.

Smurf, a rescue cat in Redwood City, CA, (about 40 kilometres north of San Jose) was brought to the Nine Lives Foundation on Dec. 28 with multiple bite marks and covered in what appears to be purple permanent fabric dye.

“I’ve seen a lot of animals used as bait for other animals; it looks to me like he was used as a chew toy,” Veterinarian Monica Rudiger told the San Jose Mercury News.

He was found in a box with lemon slices and purple rags, reported the Mercury News.

The situation isn’t anything that Rudiger’s seen before.

“I can only imagine why someone would dye him purple,” she said. “I think there are people who find it amusing to take small, innocent animals and use them as play toys.”

The eight-week-old kitten underwent surgery to his stomach and one hind leg, but he’ll get better, according to officials at the foundation.

“SMURF is expected to make a full recovery though it may require many weeks of care,” officials wrote on Facebook page on Jan. 3.

Since then, Smurf has been paired with other cats to help with his recovery. In one video posted to the Facebook page, he is seen playing with another rescue cat, Wanda who is blind.

The two, who seem to have formed a special bond, are expected to be adopted together after they are fully recovered.

The foundation has since received stacks of baby food and supplies since the pictures of Smurf went viral.
