PREVIEW: Men's Ice Hockey Hits the Road for Games at Boston College and #17/#20 UMass Lowell

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine men's ice hockey will travel to the Boston College Eagles and the #17/#20 University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks for a split weekend Hockey East series. Game time for Friday is scheduled for 7:05 pm, while Sunday is scheduled for 2:05 pm.

About the Black Bears
• The Black Bears enter the split weekend after hosting a weekend with two different opponents. #3 Boston University and #15/#18 Merrimack College made the trip north. The Terriers won Friday's contest, 5-3, while the Black Bears won in OT, 3-2, on Sunday.
• Fresh off his first career Hockey East Player of the Week honors, Victor Ostman posted 50 saves over the two home games. The junior recorded his sixth 30+ save performance of the season with a 3-2 OT victory over #15/#18 Merrimack College on Sunday afternoon.
• Lynden Breen finished the Friday/Sunday series with a career weekend. The junior alternate captain scored three goals and assisted on Ben Poisson's overtime game winner. Two of Breen's goals were short-handed and occurred on the same penalty kill. It was the fifth time in Black Bear history that a player had scored two short-handed goals in the same game.
• Junior alternate captain Lynden Breen leads the Black Bears in goals (14) and points (24). Senior alternate captain forward Ben Poisson holds the team lead in assists (14). Junior forward Didrik Henbrant (5 G, 8 A) leads all newcomers in points.
 
About the Eagles
• Boston College finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 15-18-5, ultimately falling in the Quarterfinal Round of the Hockey East Tournament to Northeastern.
• The Eagles return one of their top five scorers from 2021-22 in Nikita Nesterenko.
• Henry Wilder appeared in a 10 games last season. The junior posted a 3.07 GAA and .890 save percentage, while winning three games for the Eagles.
 
The Series with Boston College
• Maine and Boston College have squared off 134 times prior to the weekend series, with the Eagles holding an edge of 71-53-10 in the all-time series.
• BC and Maine first met on Dec. 11, 1979, with Gary Conn's game-winning goal and Jim Tortorella's 27 save performance helping the Black Bears to a 6-3 road win.
• The two squads met three times last season. Then ranked #19 Boston College won the Friday battle in Conte, 6-2, while the Hockey East rivals tied Saturday's finale, 2-2. In Orono, the Black Bears dominated the Eagles by winning 4-1 with four different goal scorers.
• There has only been one scoreless meeting between Maine and BC: a 0-0 tie coming on Jan. 1, 1998 at the Conte Forum, with Maine's current assistant coach Alfie Michaud making 42 save for the shutout.
 
About the River Hawks
• UMass Lowell finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 21-11-3, ultimately falling in the first round of the NCAA tournament to #1 Denver.
• The River Hawks return three of their top five scorers from 2021-22 in Carl Berglund, Matt Crasa, and Ryan Brushett.
• Henry Welsch appeared in six games last season. The senior posted a 2.66 GAA and .893 save percentage, while winning one game and recording one shutout for the River Hawks.
 
The Series with UMass Lowell
• The University of Maine leads the all-time series with the River Hawks at 82-49-5.
• In Lowell last season, the River Hawks won the series. UMass Lowell grabbed a win on Friday night, 5-3, while also winning the Saturday night bout, 3-4.
• Nolan Renwick, Donavan Villeneuve-Houle, and David Breazeale all scored in the weekend series in Lowell, Massachusetts last season.
• The Black Bears played host earlier this season. Friday went the way of  the River Hawks, as Saturday's high scoring series finale was won by UMaine. Breazeale, Holt, Carney, Breen, and Poisson all scored in front of 4,039 Maniacs.
• The two squads first met on Jan. 14, 1978, with UMaine dropping that road tilt, 5-1.
