Henry van de Velde: Pioneer of the Bauhaus

Location

Country
Germany

In 1913/14, Architect Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) designed the villa "Haus Schulenburg" for the family of industrialist Paul Schulenburg in Gera, which has been restored to its original state (photo from 1920). The building anticipates many design elements of the Bauhaus and Art Deco. Henry von der Velde was a universal artist who designed everything from the door knob to the desk, from the fireplace to the chic windows and from the terrace to the textile pattern of the chairs and the wall paneling - more in the sense of a Gesamtkunstwerk than a generic place to live.
