Caravan Culture 101: Insider Tips For Getting It Right

Photographer Nishchay Jain, who turned his regular van into a home-on-wheels to embark on a journey across India, shares some insight into how you can also start a caravan adventure

Caravan Tourism, a unique concept of travelling that embraces minimalism, has been a popular way of travelling in the West. However, in recent years especially after the pandemic, a sudden wave of caravan travelling has been witnessed in India. Travellers across the country are reigniting their passion for road trips, especially in caravans, which allow you to explore India’s diversity and immerse yourself in its vibrant culture.

Barty The Van

With a strong inclination towards shows related to food trucks since my childhood, my curiosity about caravans kept on growing over the years. In 2016, I started photography and observed top photographers in other countries living in a van and exploring places. The concept intrigued me, and I even started looking for ideas on how to implement it in India. And finally, after months of hard work and a journey full of challenges, I built my caravan- Barty The Van. It’s a complete package and my home-on-wheels with all the facilities, such as a functional kitchen, queen-size bed, and refrigerator. What’s more, it is even solar-powered.

Building Your Own Caravan

The caravan is your home on wheels, and building one needs precision, research, and lots of patience. But for all caravan-culture enthusiasts, I recommend starting your journey in a rental caravan for at least a month. This will allow you to experience van life with pros and cons, giving you a taste of the lifestyle needed to assess your comfort level. Once you feel confident, you can take the leap and build your caravan, customised to suit your needs and preferences. Remember to prioritise functionality, convenience, and storage space when designing your mobile home and renting a caravan for your dream road trip.

Powering Your Caravan

Reliable power sources are crucial to enjoying a comfortable and self-sufficient life on the road. For instance, I have installed three 125-watt solar panels and four 40 AH batteries in my caravan. This setup has proven highly efficient, providing enough electricity to operate fans, lights, and other essentials. With 18 USB ports and eight plugs, I can quickly charge my devices and stay connected while enjoying the serenity of my surroundings.

How To Get It Right

#CaravanLife may look enticing and magical on social media. However, living and travelling in a caravan is not as fancy as it seems. When it comes to caravan living, simplicity is the key. I strongly recommend not overdoing exterior modifications. Keeping it minimal maintains the aesthetics and ensures ease of travel and manoeuvrability in various terrains.

Further, the van culture is new in India, so the infrastructure has yet to be implemented perfectly. Be mindful of parking spaces to ensure safety. Additionally, avoiding big cities during the daytime can help you navigate congested traffic and find peaceful camping spots in the outskirts or serene rural areas. Always plan your route and be prepared for any unexpected detours. Check for the road conditions and weather forecast beforehand for a smooth road trip.

 The Art Of Slow Travel

The greatest joy of caravan living is the opportunity to embrace a slower pace of travel. Take your time to truly soak in the beauty of your surroundings, savouring the journey rather than racing to the next destination. India is a country teeming with hidden gems and cultural wonders, and by travelling slowly, you allow yourself the chance to uncover these hidden treasures.

Ideal Destinations For A Caravan Trip

India offers a plethora of breathtaking destinations, each with its distinct charm. Here are three of my top recommendations:

Ladakh: Nestled in the Himalayas, Ladakh is a haven for adventurers seeking awe-inspiring landscapes. The rugged mountain passes, crystal-clear lakes, and ancient monasteries create a surreal experience. Be sure to visit Pangong Tso Lake, Nubra Valley, and Leh for a memorable journey.

Kerala: Known as “God’s Own Country,” Kerala boasts lush greenery, tranquil backwaters, and pristine beaches. Last year, Kerala introduced caravans and caravan parks to promote tourism in the state. Experience the magic of the backwaters in Alleppey, explore the tea plantations in Munnar, and rejuvenate your senses on the serene shores of Varkala.

Rajasthan: This vibrant state showcases India’s rich history and architectural marvels. From the majestic forts of Jaipur and Jaisalmer to the romantic lakes of Udaipur, Rajasthan is a treasure trove of cultural experiences and regal splendour.
