BOOM Esports (formerly known as BOOM ID, commonly referred to as BOOM) is an Indonesian esports organization that was established in November 2016.[1] Initially, BOOM fielded teams of Indonesian teams, achieving moderate success in the Southeast Asia region. In 2022, BOOM expanded its vision beyond Indonesia, fielding a roster from across Southeast Asia, becoming the region's strongest team that year, including a win at GAMERS GALAXY: Invitational Series Dubai 2022.
In late-2023, BOOM announced a move to South America. With a few speedbumps along the way, BOOM established itself as one of the stronger teams in the region, culminating in a qualification to the Elite League Group Stage with a 3-0 score in the Swiss stage.
History[edit]
In 2017, BOOM signed their first team, an all-Indonesian team roster consisting of Dreamocel, inYourdreaM, SaintDeLucaz, SnowbaLL and Varizh.[2] The team proved to be the strongest within Indonesia, and a contender within the region, behind powerhouses such as Fnatic and Geek Fam. Shuffling through Indonesia's finest talent, by 2019, the team regularly reached the latter phases of qualifiers to major tournaments, but were unable to qualify to them with any degree of consistency.
In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic in full force, the team firmly established itself as one of Southeast Asia's best, albeit often being limited to second place in tournaments like ESL One Thailand 2020: Asia. With the return of the Dota Pro Circuit in 2021, BOOM struggled to keep this momentum, finishing 5th and 7th in the Southeast Asia Regional Leagues, and failing to qualify for The International 2021.
In 2022, BOOM expanded its horizon into the Southeast Asia region as a whole, acquiring a slot in the Upper Division and signing a roster of Tino, Yopaj, Fbz, TIMS and skem, later replacing Tino with JaCkky. BOOM quickly established itself as the strongest team in Southeast Asia, taking 1st, 2nd and 1st in the Regional Leagues that season, as well as a win at GAMERS GALAXY: Invitational Series Dubai 2022. Internationally, however, the team's performances were far more mixed, with poor finishes at ESL One Stockholm 2022 and PGL Arlington 2022, and concluding with a 9th-12th finish at The International 2022.
The next season saw the Southeast Asia region's traditional upended. BOOM, who lost their talented support duo, struggled throughout Tour 1, and were relegated – shockingly – alongside regional powerhouse Fnatic. The team attempted to rebuild, but were unable to recapture the magic of their previous roster, failing to qualify for The International 2023.
With Valve announcing the conclusion of the Dota Pro Circuit, BOOM chose to explore the untapped potential of the South America region. They signed a superstar roster made up of Evil Geniuses, Thunder Awaken and beastcoast players – the region's strongest teams at the time – with the signing of Pakazs, SLATEM$, Sacred, Matthew and Mjz. Surprisingly, however, the roster crashed out in 5th-6th in the ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023: South America Closed Qualifiers. The team then reshuffled, adding ILICH-, n1ght and Panda, becoming far more consistent in qualifiers, although kept behind HEROIC in the Grand Final. BOOM did place a respectable 4th in Games of the Future 2024, with several regions opting not to compete in the controversial tournament.
BOOM finally made a breakthrough, qualifying to Elite League and PGL Wallachia with convincing wins over beastcoast. The latter was not without controversy, as a pause and remake during their match against Leviatán left their opponents unhappy.[3] At Elite League, the roster surprised many in the Swiss Stage, qualifying for the Group Stage with convincing wins over PSG Quest, Team Secret and Talon Esports.
