I was taking a long walk through the city and stopped in for a few cold ones. This was a smallish place full of furniture that doesn't match but this place was cozy and people seemed happy to be there. The service was friendly and prices were fair.

Loved this local cafe. Great casual vibe. Fabulous soup and a relaxing place to hang out and have a beer

This is the kind of bar I feel most at home in. It reminds me of Delux Cafe in Boston. It is shabby, chic, dark, and fun. The owner and bartender is a lovely German woman. And she makes some excellent cocktails!
You could spend all afternoon here just looking around or playing games (they have many) or talking and listening to the great French and German music. Along with Cafe De Wetering nearby, this and that were my two favorite bars during my week in Amsterdam. For me, this is a must go to place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael C.Amsterdam, The Netherlands1957517Aug 29, 2019Updated review
Nice atmosphere, lots of German beers, and close to the Rijksmuseum without being overrun by tourists.

There's a good crowd of people - mostly vibrant people with little to no worn out tourists types (except us!). I got the Old Fashioned which was made nicely, hand muddled I think. My wife got a Moscow mule, which came with cucumbers - fun! It's like a San Francisco neighborhood bar, except people dress Amsterdam instead of bay area grunge.

Two years later and I love this place as much as ever.
Their lattes are delicious and their homemade sodas can quench any thirst.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Feb 1, 2014Previous reviewWow, Café Brecht, wow!
I was so excited for birthday lunch here and I wasn't disappointed. Stylistically, this place is beautiful. - The perfect mix of eclectic and kitsch. From the mismatched wallpaper, the tatty tweed chairs and huge looming lampshades, it's all just wonderful and oozes vintage chic.
We perched upon a particularly comfy chaise longue and gazed around in wonder. It's definitely one of the most distinctive cafés I've been in. So much so that I just couldn't help but 'oooh' and 'aaah.' I really did feel like I'd awoke in a 1920's living room!
We ordered some toasted filled tortilla sandwiches. I had mozzarella, pesto, rocket and grilled aubergine and it was delicious. I also went for the dreamnuts tea which had flavours of caramelised almonds and apple. It was delicious and nothing like I'd tried before!
Service was fast and friendly and we were impressed with the bar, especially the range of gins. I imagine Café Brecht becomes quite the bar come nightfall, and having walked past a few times in the evening, it certainly looked so.
This would definitely be a local haunt of mine if I didn't live a good 500 miles away!

Ok so I get that it's meant to be a throwback, with really old furniture and it is sorta quaint. They do a good job of pushing the dated feel with ancient chairs, tables and pictures.......but....... It just all feels a bit manky.
So imagine all the really worn, battered, smelly, dusty stuff that's left at the end of a car boot or jumble sale. That is what this place is full of. It's literally quite manky. Some chairs seemed over 100 years old and it was like they had not been dusted in the same amount of time.
For me this is a novelty pub. You would go once, but you would not go back. Plus points. They to a couple of nice IPA's and the staff were friendly. Negatives, the furniture, the decor, the dust. The weird haphazard layout. I like quirky, but this was just a bit to fusty and run down.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Dominique F.Oslo, Norway3131053171Apr 11, 2018
3.5 stars.
Came in on a Friday evening and this place was packed. Itæs your hipster bar with furniture from the 80s and 90s. My friend and I have a polaroid pic taken of us that night at the bar and we literally look like we jumped out from another era. ANYWAYS. we both got cocktails and they were decent but nothing to hugely rave about. Atmosphere of the place is pretty chill though.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Peter A.Amsterdam, The Netherlands4112Jan 16, 2019
Awesome place to go on a date.
You can go here during the day for a chat with a friend or in the evening for a date or to... chat with friends and have drinks. Ha!
It's not necessarily a great place to meet people, but it's a fantastic place to have conversations with people you already know.
In the evenings, there are always people, and sometimes it's crowded.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jessica C.Amsterdam, The Netherlands244300795Jul 6, 2015
This place has personality! From the decor to the seating to the drinks, everything is so interesting. It really does feel like you are in someone's living room. I completely understand why people love it!
Menus are in Dutch and English, so there's not much to worry about there. They don't take credit cards here, but they do take pin and cash. And there are seats outside for when it is a beautiful day!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Andrea P.New York, NY15381266Mar 25, 2015
I absolutely love Café Brecht. It's one of my favorites in the entire city.
It's completely different from any other café in Amsterdam, it really has its own character. It's a typical Berlin café with mismatched sofas, tables, and table lamps spread everywhere without any particular order or organization. It just looks so warm and cosy!! It's a place to meet up with your friends to chitchat, slouched in a couch, grab a bite to eat.
In terms of drinks, the menu offers of course beers, including german beers on tap. Don't even try the wine, it's terrible. Rather have a look at the cocktails, they have some nice things to offer in that department.
They also have nice snacks, and lunches.
The only problem is... it can get really difficult to get a spot!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0
