Kokkari is the place where I go on special occasions like birthday, anniversary, or treat because I always get amazing experience w/beautiful food and super attentive service.
The roasted octopus and stuffed calamari w/feta are must-try, and the lamb chop and rib eye steak are the best and you will remember for a very long time. The manager, Michele is very welcoming and the waiter Davide is truly professional.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Apr 12, 2024Updated review
Our Kokkari love continues! We recently planned a spur of the moment trip to San Francisco and found ourselves near Kokkari at dinnertime.
We called and secured a last-minute reservation for two at the bar and savored another incredible dinner!
We shared the sizzling saghanaki (pan-fried cheese, yes please!) and beautifully balanced Kokkari salad (arugula, strawberries, pine nuts, and feta).
He enjoyed the lamb chops (when in Greece...or a Greek restaurant!) and an Oxi Negroni (n/a).
I loved the clean halibut filet and a glass of the new-to-me Russian River Pinot from Oakwild Ranch.
The delicious food, warm environment, and welcoming service together make Kokkari a such special spot that we hope to return to for years to come!Helpful 7Thanks 2Love this 10Oh no 0Feb 27, 2023Previous reviewKokkari is a San Francisco institution, and one of my all-time favorite restaurants!
Kokkari (and sister restaurant Evvia in Palo Alto) is known for their elevated Greek cuisine and warm hospitality. Their consistency in both areas is the reason they've stayed open since the 1980s!
I've been to Kokkari for work and special occassions a handful of times over the years and was fortunate to return in the fall for a work lunch. We toured the menu and loved it all:
-Saghanaki - fried cheese - DO IT!
-Dip sampler with homemade pita
-Summer peach salad
-Moussaka
-Lamb
-Salmon
-Sole special
-Ravioli
-Cookie platter
Add some Greek white wine, recommended by our server. And the rustic ambiance. Take me to Greece!
Menu items I love from past visits:
-Gigantes
-Zucchini cakes
-Greek salad
-Kokkari salad
Our server Todd was welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive. The restaurant was busy, as it always seems to be, with a wonderful energy. Make a reservation for your next special occasion and experience Kokkari for yourself! - 303150289Apr 12, 2024
Came here for a team dinner and ordered a huge assortment of food. Service was great esp for our huge party of 9 guests and was very accommodating. Would recommend the oven baked fish (not pictured) - it's super tender on the inside. I would also recommend the ribeye which was great.
Overall would recommend for a special occasion as it's on the pricier side.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Christiane F.San Francisco, CA2104260Apr 3, 2024
Kokkari had been on my list for a while now and I'm glad I finally went! The food is very well prepared and served, presentation is great.
Greek food isn't my cuisine of choice but I still enjoyed the meals. The service was great and our server was very attentive tho a little pushy.
Overall great experience but unsure if I'd come back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 31, 20241 check-in
Food (5/5): While expensive, the quality is extremely high here. I had the sea bass and it was absolutely amazing. They did a wonderful job of removing the bones from the fish and making it easy to eat. A lot of restaurants don't even put the effort. There were only a few bones that couldn't be caught. My friend had the lamb chop which was amazing when I tried a bit as well. The appetizers we got including the fried sardines and octopus were super delicious and well made. Top notch meal. The only caveat is that the day after I got a bit sick. I can't necessarily pin point it to this meal but this was the last thing I eat. Regardless, keeping the 5 star score because it's hard to tell if this was the issue and the actual food experience was wonderful.
Service (5/5): Attentive and friendly service where the servers did a great job of checking up on us, communicating about dishes, and making us feel welcomed. They said the fish would be deboned but some might still be left, and wow they actually did a good job as discussed above. The food came out at a good pace and the overall experience was wonderful.
Ambiance (5/5): Wow, such an amazingly decorated restaurant with Greek ovens, nice bar area, private dining rooms, and a rustic feel. It's also extremely large and spacious. Really top notch ambiance.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 28, 2024
The service was great. The waiter memorized the extra menu items and the wait staff was really attentive.
I had the octopus salad for lunch. And I absolutely loved how tasty and tender the octopus was. I also had a taste of the chicken and that too was also tasty.
The ambiance of the restaurant it definitely feels like a fine dining experience.
The desserts had more options then the entrees for lunch.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 28, 2024
Kokkari is a beautiful special occasion restaurant with a rustic interior and unique menu that are elegant but not decadent. Being there feels like an event from the get go. I enjoyed my Maroulosalata salad but ultimately felt that it was lacking given the pedigree of the restaurant. It didn't have a protein addition and the entrees section basically eschewed vegetarianism. There are stronger candidates for that diet at fast fine establishments even if the experience of dining at Kokkari is clearly a winner. However, our server was exceptional, attentive and knowledgeable. She made us feel at home immediately.

Finally had the chance to try the famous Kokkari and so glad I did! The fiance was able to snag a last minute reservation there and we were able to go around 7:30pm on a Monday night. The restaurant was crowded but lively but we were quickly seated. We ended up ordering:
* lamb meatballs - these were delicious and absolutely loved the tomato sauce this came with
* fried zucchini cakes - I'm not sure how to say the proper name but these were soooo good. Light crispy and flavorful in every bite!
* lamb chops - soft succulent and juicy these were great with the fries it came with. Portions are a little small but food taste and quality is great
* moussaka - at first I wasn't going to order this but I'm so glad I did! This was like a delicious light cloudy lasagna but without too much cheese? Not sure what the top part was but it was a creamy goodness
* stuffed spring rolls with ice cream - this was the dessert and so delicious as it was filled with a custard and crispy outside. This went amazing with the pistachio ice cream!
Overall the food and ambiance was awesome!Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 3Oh no 1 - Feb 22, 2024
I honestly really was hoping to give this restaurant a higher rating!
The ambience was lovely, albeit a little loud. The restaurant was nice and spacious inside and the lighting was romantic. Service was quick and less friendly than I expected but I also assume it was because they were swamped with a Valentine's Day rush (we went the day after Valentine's Day)
Impressive wine list, we went with a bottle of Pinot that I found delicious.
What disappointed me was the lamb meatballs and the octopus. I found the octopus rubbery and not very tender. The meatballs had a mealy consistency and were drier than I hoped. I think the sauce on both dishes was the best part
Tried the zucchini cakes as well and found them just ok. Flavor was good and they were crispy, but it was underwhelming, nothing too special
The lamb riblets were delicious and fatty. Spanakotiropita and Dolmathes were also delicious, excellent spinach and cheese filling and filo texture along with very well seasoned rice in the dolmathes.
The dessert baklava was ok, too heavily spiced (warming spices like nutmeg and cinnamon) for me. The ice cream helped balance it out
All in all it was a nice enough experience but I was disappointed with some of the food. I think I would love to come back and maybe try different options!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - 17737Feb 16, 2024
Kokkari was our Valentine's Day meal while visiting San Francisco. While we had a lovely night, I think it didn't quite meet our expectations. The restaurant itself and ambiance is beautiful - it's a stunning space with very attentive staff. The general vibe, thought, was not as cozy as we anticipated. It was husstling and busy with waiters in every direction. Additionally, most of the folks it seemed were there on business meetings.
The food also had its ups and downs (but mainly ups). Definitely order the whole fish - sea bass was our choice. It was beautifully prepared and almost entirely deboned. We opted for a few small plates on top of that: the brussels and the lamb ribblets. Both me and my partner didn't care for the brussels, they were just alright. While my partner loved the ribblets, I found them very fatty and they weren't my cup of tea. I wish we ordered their traditional lamb entree instead.
We finished off with the chocolate cake and the pistachio creme desserts. The cake was intensely chocolatey and indulgent. Would highly recommend both.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
