Eilean Donan Castle & Visitor Centre

Visit Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic and photographed monuments. It is without a doubt an icon in the Scottish Highlands that draws visitors from near and far each year for its stunning setting at the point where three great sea-lochs meet, surrounded by forested mountains of Kintail. At the bright modern visitor centre you can find a Ticket Office, Gift Shop and Restaurant operated by Conchra Charitable Trust which was set up in 1980s to preserve this historic castle for future generations. Eilean Donon has been around since 634AD when Bishop Donald chose it as his monastic cell but further fortification took place during Alexander II’s reign in 13th century with seven towers connected by curtain walls forming what once occupied all of island’s area before Jacobite uprising lead to destruction using naval frigates bombs on 10th May 1719 . The castle laid silent until 1912 – 1932 when Lt Col John MacRae-Gilstrap reconstructed it into family home adding bridge part recognizable today completing classic image associated with castle itself .
