Zebak is a large crocodile encountered at the end of the Path of Crondis, within the Tombs of Amascut raid. As the strongest crocodile with an ever growing hunger, Zebak accepted an offer by Amascut to lure Crondis in return for endless supply of food; however, he was instead cursed to an eternal life without being able to eat while guarding his former god in the tombs.

History[edit | edit source]

Once a regular crocodile, Zebak was neither the strongest or fastest among his kind.[1] However, embodying Crondis' ideals, Zebak instead used his resourcefulness to lure his fellow crocodiles into traps, such as taking their food and letting them starve, and, eventually, also eating them.[2] Over time, he became the strongest crocodile, but his gluttony was so boundless that he began having difficulty in maintaining a stable supply of food.[3]

Like with Kephri, Amascut eventually learned of Zebak's desires, promising him a supply of food so bountiful that he would never go hungry. In exchange, Zebak would help her to lure and capture Crondis, to which he agreed and succeeded.[4] However, Amascut, instead of fulfilling her promise, cursed Zebak so that any food he tried to eat would crumble into dust, as well as preventing him from starving to death, leaving him eternally tormented.[5]

An adventurer would later slay Zebak to free Crondis, who took a fang that broke off and buried it in an islet surrounded by crocodiles on the River Elid.

Mechanics[edit | edit source]

A player fighting Zebak, the Guardian of Crondis.

Zebak's base defence level can be lowered by a maximum of 20 damage, reducing his base defence level down to a minimum of 50.

Zebak attacks with all three attack styles, with his melee attack having a chance to inflict bleeding, which deals additional damage over time that is increased further with movement. His melee attack can be avoided simply by standing away from melee range. Zebak's standard attacks will be indicated by visual and audio cues: His magic attack spits a pot into the air that splits into red orbs, whereas his ranged attack spits a large rock into the air that splinters into smaller rocks.

At 85%, 70%, 55% and 40% health, Zebak will queue one of two special attacks and alternate between them.

Zebak will then launch more acid into the arena, this time with three stones. The players will then have some time (four of Zebak's attacks) to move pots of water towards the stones, to then break to cleanse the area behind the stones of poison before Zebak lets out a mighty roar. Each jug of water will clear a 5x5 area of poison (3x3 with Upset Stomach enabled). If the player is not within 3 tiles behind the stones that Zebak previously spat out, this roar knocks the player back and deals massive amounts of damage.

Zebak can also launch waves that slowly move from one side of the arena to the other. The player will have to navigate Zebak's arena and avoid getting hit by the waves by going between the gaps in the waves. If the player is hit by one of Zebak's waves, the player will take damage[clarification needed] and be pushed in the direction that the wave is going.

Upon reaching ~25% of his health, Zebak will become enraged, significantly increasing his attack speed. This stacks alongside path leveling at 2 and 4 respectively.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Zebak's name appears to be portmanteau of Sobek, a crocodile-headed god from Egyptian mythology, and Beelzebub, one of the seven Princes of Hell, being particularly associated with the sin of gluttony.
  • If the player is bleeding from Zebak's melee attack, they will leave behind temporary splatters of blood in their path. Should a wave wash over these splatters, then the wave will be become Bloody Waves.
  • Zebak's story resembles the Greek myth of Tantalus, who was sent to Tartarus as punishment for his trickery and avarice. He was made to stand in a pool under a fruit tree; whenever he tried to take a drink of water the pool would recede, and whenever he tried to eat the fruit from the tree the branches would raise, thus preventing him from ever being able to eat or drink.
  • Despite being a crocodile, defeating Zebak does not count for completion of the "In a while..." elite clue step.
  • At a whopping 9x9 tile size, Zebak is currently the physically largest monster in runescape

He longed for death, but the Devourer's curse prevented this as well, binding him to the world of the living."
