Even though Jennifer Capriati is said to be recovering fully from a prescription medication overdose, a friend says she still has a long road ahead.

“She has a huge void that she needs to fill,” former tennis star Justin Gimelstob tells The Early Show on CBS. “She’s in tremendous pain physically and mentally. She struggled with depression, and it’s a tough story.”

Capriati, 34, a onetime teen sensation who would go to be ranked No. 1, lacked a normal childhood and the “social interaction” to help her later in life, says Gimelstob.

“She said tennis gives her structure. Without that, that’s when the problems ensue, and she’s had trouble finding an identity and a sense of purpose,” he says.

Capriati’s mom is also staying positive and supporting her daughter’s road to recovery. “[Jennifer’s mother] is a very religious woman,” says Gimelstob, who spoke to the mother. “She said God is good [and] God is taking care of [Jen].”
