The Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities ice skating race)

Here in The Netherlands every time it is winter people start talking about the elf steden tocht (Eleven cities tour)
The Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities tour) is a ice skating tour, almost 200 kilometres (120 miles)long through frozen canals, rivers and lakes.
It is held in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands, leading past all eleven historical cities of the province. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 15 centimetres (6 inch).
When the ice is suitable, the tour is announced and starts within 48 hours.
In 100 years since the first time, the race has only been done 15 times!
The right conditions are hard to get as we depend on nature to freez our canals.
The last Elfstedentocht was in 1997 on the 4th of januari, i was a little boy when my mother woke me up in the very early in the morning to watch the start of the race.
Since then every year people have been anticipating the race, but it never came.
In 2012 we almost had the race again, but it was called off because the conditions were not right.
