The Magician from Riga, Mikhail Tal won in a strong field full of world champions, past & future. This minimalist modern design was a smash hit with both grandmasters and fans alike. The alternating colors of the bishops’, kings’, and queens’ crowns add an eastern European charm while arguably adding clarity: a charming cold-war era detail that distinguishes this set without compromising its modern, playable design. Incidentally, it was also Fischer’s favorite chess set.
