Disaster Girl meme sold as NFT for $500,000

NFT has never ceased to amaze the art world. Zoë Roth, the woman in the Disaster Girl meme, sold the original photograph as NFT for $500,000. The viral meme features 4-year-old Roth smirking in front of a burning house in January 2005. The photo stood out amongst the rest and it became an internet sensation in 2008.

Roth, who is now 21 years old and studying at a university, plans to use the fund to pay off her student loans. The NFT was purchased on 17 April by @3fmusic for 180 ethereum (ETH). The value of an ETH as of today sits at $3,088.29 (180 ETH = $555,892.2 or Rp8.036 billion). @3fmusic is believed to be Farzin Fardin Fard, CEO of a Dubai-based music company. It is unclear whether 3FMusic is a business, Fard alone, or a group of people.

Disaster Girl is among a slew of memes sold as NFT for exorbitant price. Nyan Cat in 2020 sold for almost $600,000. The Overly Attached Girlfriend, Grumpy Cat and Bad Luck Brian memes were also converted into NFTs. The original creator or owner will receive a 10% commission on each resale.
