28 January 2023

An international conference on Adriano Banchieri, (Bologna, 1568 – therein, 1634), one of the most interesting and versatile musical personalities of the period between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Olivetan monk, prolific composer in the field of sacred and profane polyphony, he was also active as an authoritative music theorist, ingenious teacher, as well as author of witty literary writings, some of which are still widespread and well known, as in the case of Cacasenno added to Bertoldo and Bertoldino by Giulio Cesare Croce. His madrigal comedies, and in particular the famous Barca di Venezia per Padova, while fitting into the vein inaugurated by Orazio Vecchi, are distinguished by an irresistible humor which also gives this author a marked relevance in the field of theatrical history. The initiative is part of the multi-year program of the Tradimus Group of the Levi Foundation, reconnecting both with previous studies on the diffusion of Italian music in Central Europe and with the in-depth study of the writings of Gioseffo Zarlino on the front of Renaissance music theory.
The appointment will be followed live by the Foundation’s YouTube channel.
