The Kampong, located in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida, is a 9-acre botanical garden that welcomes visitors from Tuesday through Friday. However, it's important to note that visits must be booked in advance. This lush garden is part of the non-profit National Tropical Botanical Garden and offers a unique opportunity to explore a diverse range of plant species in a tranquil setting.
The Kampong has a rich history, having been purchased as a winter home by renowned horticulturalist Dr. David Fairchild and his wife Marian in 1916. Dr. Fairchild was instrumental in introducing around 30,000 plant species and varietals into the United States. Many of these plants can be seen in the garden, making it a living testament to his significant contributions to horticulture.
The Kampong is more than just a garden; it's an urban oasis that houses over 1200 species of fruit trees, palms, ethnobotanical plants, and teaching collections for botanical study. Among the living collections, visitors can find tropical fruits such as pomelo, 23 cultivars of avocado, and 65 varieties of mango, along with palms, flowering trees, ficus, aroids, and bamboo. This diversity makes The Kampong a fascinating destination for plant enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
