Katie Grand, Love magazine editor and stylist extraordinaire, effectively ignited Bambi Northwood-Blyth’s modeling career this past fashion season. Northwood-Blyth appeared in several shows that Grand styled, including Emanuel Ungaro, Giles, Loewe and Topshop Unique. She also walked Chanel, Balenciaga, Kenzo and closed Diesel Black Gold. It was the Topshop Unique show, however, that set Northwood-Blyth apart — leading the finale fortified by an army of almost 50 models following her. With her intense gaze, punctuated by strong features and charming personality, Northwood-Blyth is captivating.

What drew you to modeling?
“It became a full-time job this year when I joined an agency in Sydney. I was drawn to it because it meant I got to move away from home [Melbourne] to Sydney, where my boyfriend lives, defer my studies of entrepreneurship (wasn’t so excited to get back to textbooks anyway), travel the world, and work with great people!”
Explain more about the Bambi tattoo on your wrist.
“Obviously, there’s the name reference, so that’s where it comes from, but I got it tattooed while I was on ‘Schoolies’ week in Byron Bay, Australia. Schoolies week is a week to celebrate finishing final high-school exams.”
You had a high-profile season. What do you think about this quick success and buzz around you?
“It’s been such a whirlwind experience that I haven’t even had a moment to stop and think about it. There’s a new adventure/job/client/country every day!”
Katie Grand played a big role in your experience this season; what was it like working with her?
“Katie is incredible — a master of her trade. Totally inspirational and a true visionary. It was amazing to work with her my first season.”
What did you learn from Grand?
“Katie taught me to stay true to myself. I also observed that it’s smart to work hard and not to complain. Everyone gets tired. Moaning gets you nowhere but back to your old part-time job.”
The finale at Topshop Unique was impressive. What did it feel like to have all the models follow you out?
“To be honest, I was nervous. It was my first show in London. I was just concentrating on getting my walk right! It felt great.”
What’s your favorite feature or body part?
“On boys — brains and eyes. On girls — attitude.”
What are three words or phrases that describe you?
“Laid-back, Bambi-like, a beach girl.”
What are your favorite pieces in your wardrobe?
“Leather pants and my leather jacket. I would love to say a beanie, but I’m still searching for one!”
Who is your favorite designer?
“Day to day, I wear a mix of everything. For high end, Balenciaga and Isabel Marant.”
Does having juvenile diabetes affect your approach to life or modeling?
“In a way of being able to just get on with things, and having self-discipline.”
What’s on your iPod?
“EVERYTHING! I love a good mix. I have songs from Phoenix to the Strokes, to Ja Rule and Beyoncé.”
Do you have any hobbies?
“Plenty! While I’m working overseas — like now — walking all the streets and discovering new things.”
Is there anything about the modeling industry that surprises you?
“I never really analyzed the business before I started. Every day I am surprised, but I don’t obsess over it. I just keep my head down, focus on working hard and getting the job done. I enjoy it day by day.”
