Taking visual cues from Jan Tshichold's earlier work, this three-spread article briefly describes how the touchstone typographer's pursuit of a "functional typeface" arose in response to increasing volumes of circulating print, and how the resulting (and then revolutionary) super-clean typographic style addressed a growing need for economy of expression.
