August 9 marks 75 years since the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on Japan, devastating the city of Nagasaki three days after the first attack on Hiroshima. Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945, with the formal surrender ceremony taking place on September 2 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, ending World War II. American History TV and C-SPAN’s Washington Journal were LIVE on this morning of the Nagasaki anniversary to examine President Harry Truman’s decision to use the new weapon and the legacy of these atomic attacks. Guests included Richard Frank, author of Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire, and Peter Kuznick, director of American University’s Nuclear Studies Institute. close
