Ingredients

Thinly Sliced Beef: You can use ribeye or sirloin. Ribeye is fatty and flavorful, while sirloin is leaner.Substitute: Chicken strips can also work.

Bell Peppers: Adds color and a bit of sweetness.Substitute: You can use mushrooms if you prefer.

Onion: It adds flavor and crunch.Substitute: Red onions for a sharper taste or green onions for something milder.

Cheese: Provolone or American cheese are classic choices.Substitute: You can use cheddar or even mozzarella.

Hoagie Rolls: These are the long bread rolls that hold everything together.Substitute: French baguette or any long, crusty bread.

Tips

  • Slice the beef while it's partially frozen; it makes it easier to get thin slices.
  • Use a hot, well-oiled skillet or griddle for quick and even cooking.
  • Cook the veggies until they're soft but not mushy; they should still have some bite.
  • Layer the cheese on the meat while it's still in the pan to help it melt perfectly.
  • Preheat your hoagie rolls in the oven for a couple of minutes for a toasty crunch.

How to Serve

Serve the Philly Cheesesteak hot, right off the stove. The melted cheese and steaming meat make it the most enjoyable. You can also add condiments like ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise if you like, but they're not necessary.

  • Classic Style: Just the steak, veggies, and cheese in a hoagie roll. Simple and delicious.
  • With a Side: Serve it with French fries, blooming onion or onion rings for a complete meal.
  • Spicy Kick: Add some sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce for those who like it hot.

Ribeye is the only steak worthy of a true Philly cheesesteak. A great Italian hoagie roll from liscio's or a similar Philly bakery is next in importance. Onions are mandatory, and anytime you see peppers, other than hot on a cheese steak you know your steak has no flavor to begin with. American cheese provides both the tang and creaminess needed to bind this sandwich together, while sauce is another nice option to balance the sandwich out. It should also be noted that wrapping this sandwich tightly in foil or parchment paper for 5 minutes or so will marry all the flavors together for the best cheesesteak you could possibly have.
