Woman who accused Julian Assange of sexual assault claims he 'humiliated and abused' her and denies she set him up on behalf of the CIA in tell-all book

  • Anna Ardin said the WikiLeaks founder tricked her into having sex without a condom in 2010 while staying at her flat in Sweden
  • Her book, In the Shadow of Assange: My Testimony, is the first time she has publicly detailed the alleged assault
  • Ardin's allegations, along with those made by a woman known only as Miss W, prompted Assange's flight to the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012 to avoid arrest
  • Assange has denied all sexual assault accusations against him and the case has been dropped by Swedish prosecutors

A woman who accuses Julian Assange of sexual assault has claimed he 'humiliated and abused her' in a new tell-all book that details the alleged attack for the first time.

Anna Ardin, who was previously referred to as Miss A, said the WikiLeaks founder tricked her into having sex without a condom in 2010 while staying at her flat in Sweden.

She also said the 49-year-old refused to shower during his stay and left 'turds floating in the toilet'.

Ardin, a church deacon, said one of her motivations for writing about her experience now is to dispel online theories that she was a CIA agent tasked with setting up Assange, whom she claims was 'active' in supporting such rumours, The Times reported.

In her book, In the Shadow of Assange: My Testimony, Ardin explained that she would help Assange write seminars during his stay in Sweden, where he was promoting WikiLeaks.

She wrote that she had considered sleeping with him in a bid to annoy her ex-partner but that Assange's celebrity had also been part of the appeal.

The year of his stay, the Australian native drew the ire of the United States government after WikiLeaks released secret cables about the war in Iraq along with a video of the US military killing civilians.

Ardin wrote that she had thought 'scoring with Julian Assange' might 'be a pretty fun thing' but that the his behaviour changed that night.

After they agreed to have sex, Ardin claimed Assange pushed her onto the bed roughly and 'deliberately sabotaged' the condom so he could have sex without one.

She told Swedish media: 'Julian is definitely not a monster. But he crossed my boundaries'.

Ardin wrote that she and Assange attended a party the following night and that she continued to let him stay in her flat.

'The Julian who took part in the [party] is totally different from the one who humiliated and abused me the previous evening,' Ardin wrote, adding that Assange 'is in many ways a fantastic person'.

Ardin also recalled in her book how Assange refused to shower during his stay with her, leaving the flat smelling 'strongly of unwashed body, of dried-in sweat'.

She also claimed he left 'turds floating in the toilet'.

The Times reported that Ardin has previously explained that she defines her encounter with Assange as sexual abuse but said that others might call it a 'grey zone'.

'It feels like society is ready to talk about these grey areas now,' she told a Swedish newspaper.

Ardin wrote in her book that she had no plan to report Assange to the police but did so after another Swedish woman, known only as Miss W, contacted her a few days after the alleged incident with a similar story.

Miss W claimed that she had also been sexually assaulted by Assange who had forcibly penetrated her without a condom, The Times reported.

Assange has denied all allegations of sexual assault.

In 2012, he hid in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden over the investigation into the sexual abuse allegations.

He claimed that Sweden could then extradite him to the US - where he said he would not face a fair trial - over charges linked to WikiLeaks.

In 2017, Swedish prosecutors dropped their preliminary case, with the director of public prosecutions Marianne Ny saying 'all possibilities to conduct the investigation' had been 'exhausted'.

Assange remained in the embassy until April 2019 when Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno revoked his asylum status. He was promptly arrested on an outstanding UK warrant for violating the terms of his bail.

On the day of his arrest, Assange was arrested again at a police station on a US extradition request related to his alleged role in the release of classified documents in 2010.

In May 2019, Swedish prosecutors reopened their case but dropped it that November, saying evidence had 'weakened' due to the considerable amount of time that had passed since the alleged assaults.

Assange is currently in HM Prison Belmarsh while the US appeals a decision by the UK not to extradite him.

'We are never going to get to know whether Julian is a perpetrator in a juridical sense,' Ardin wrote.

'But I can describe the events as I experienced them. Instead of standing witness in the trial which never happened, I now want to give my version.'

Ardin's move to promote her book on a TV chat show has been sharply criticised by Anne Ramberg, the former head of Sweden's bar association, who claims Assange is the real victim of the legal and diplomatic fray.

'To now write a book and make a career of what is described as abuse seems extremely questionable,' Ramberg tweeted, adding that Assange 'should be considered innocent'.

Swedish broadcaster Cissi Wallin responded in the Expressen newspaper, telling Ramberg she should thank Ardin for standing up for all Swedish women.

'Anna Ardin set herself on fire for all of us,' Wallin wrote.
