More than just an adorable dog, Max has taken down drug cartel bosses and managed to help snare the "narco of narcos".

The bloodhound helped catch criminals for nearly six years serving in the Secretariat of the Navy of Mexico (SEMAR) as a tracking dog.

In July 2022 he shot to fame as his skills were put to the test when he was tasked with helping the Mexican and US track down Rafael Caro Quintero, who was considered a top priority at the time.

Max has finally retired

Max, who was born on April 20, 2016, successfully tracked down Guadalajara Cartel founder Quintero, who was branded the "narco of narcos".

Max was also part of the Urban Search and Rescue Unit (USAR) in the Mexican Armed Forces, tasked with helping people following several natural disasters. His miraculous skills helped rescue some of those trapped in the collapse of Chiquihuite Hill in 2021, when there was a massive landslide.

SEMAR originally pencilled in 2023 as the special canine's retirement date, but rather unsurprisingly, the one-of-a-kind pup lasted an entire year longer in the job.

At the age of seven Max's time serving the USAR and Mexican Armed Forces officially came to an end this month, and the Mexican Navy recognised the extraordinary contribution of the canine at a special ceremony.

In a statement released by SEMAR, authorities highlighted the "great work" of their retiring canines and they would be looking for more dogs to follow in Max's footsteps, adding that they dogs that can "serve and track in search and rescue operations for this noble institution".
