Dutch soccer fans in general have a reputation for being friendly and good sports, no matter the outcome. Despite only winning one major trophy, Oranje supporters aren’t bitter or jaded, and they’ll proudly celebrate a good showing.
Oranjegekte (orange madness) reached fever pitch during the 2010 World Cup, and despite the loss at the very end, a boat parade and party were held to celebrate the team’s return. The celebration for the runners-up in 2010 was nearly indistinguishable from the party for the winners in 1988. One of the main differences was that this time around, fewer houseboats ran the risk of sinking into the Amstel.
Now, as the 2022 World Cup is around the corner, the dream of raising the trophy remains.
Once again, streets will likely be decked out with orange bunting, while cafés, and bars will be overflowing with people gathering to watch the games, wearing everything from orange T-shirts to full lion costumes. Th e only question is: How will they top the canal parades and parties if they do manage to win this time?
