76-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger has spoken about how people can become consistent in the gym. However, the seven-time Mr. Olympia’s latest advice about consistency might be the most mind-boggling advice you’ll come across on the internet. The bodybuilding icon highlighted a study that showed how adding avocados to your diet might do the trick.

In his daily fitness newsletter, Arnold’s Pump Club, The Terminator wrote about the findings of a study. I researched randomly selected families and put them into two groups. One group ate 14 avocados, while the other ate three. They observed that those who “ate more avocados were more likely to exercise.” Yet you must be wondering how.

What’s the relationship between avocados and consistency?

Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that the “metabolic equivalent of task (MET)” increased by 2197 points in the families who regularly ate 12 avocados compared to the “control” group. However, the 76-year-old fitness icon explained that it’s not likely that avocado has some miraculous nutrient hidden for this long. Instead, Schwarzenegger wrote that the spillover or transfer effect” might be responsible.

The former champion explained that participants eating more avocados “recognized they were making a healthy choice.” This recognition had the spillover effect of inspiring them to make other changes. While, in the case of the study, it was becoming a regular at the gym, it could also inspire people in different ways. You don’t even have to eat avocados.

Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that habits like “sticking to a regular bedtime, cutting back on alcohol,” and similar habits will have a spillover effect. However, the Hollywood star has other methods for those specifically looking to become consistent in the gym.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has another method

In a past edition of the newsletter, the bodybuilding icon tackled the consistency issue. He highlighted another study involving a positive reward loop. Arnie revealed that a study involving scientists from 15 universities and 60,000 participants found those who got paid as little as $1.75 per workout kept coming back.

Hence, Arnold Schwarzenegger explained that people could use this method to self-reward themselves. “Committing to 9 cents to ‘never miss a workout twice’ and build your exercise habit is a winning investment,” wrote the former Mr. Universe.
