Origin:
Muraqat round bead made in the villages of southeastern Mauritania by women in the early 20th century. These beads are also sometimes called Kiffa beads after one of the villages where they were made.
Description:
Designs of these Muraqat beads are typical of traditional work: the women take pieces of glass which they melt and then shape into beads and they paint with pigments using twigs to make very fine designs. Muraqat beads are still produced in Mauritania today, but the designs are different. The patterns are much coarser, thicker and the colors are made with modern paint which is more brilliant.
Very fine blue, yellow, red and white chevron line patterns and four big eye with a blue center surrounded by a white and a large red circle and a yellow circle.
Measurements: 11mm long, 12mm wide. In very good condition, with very fine designs.
