Condition: as pictured, few bends around margins. Dimensions: 28.8 x 21.1 cm. The artwork is baring signature "Andy Warhol", in the lower right, done in pencil, also numbered in the lower right, referring to a series of 250. The artwork has a reference number marked on verso, which in our opinion belong to the previous collections this artwork was part of. The artwork is offered as after the artist, sold as is.
The present work comes with documentation that consists of: general object description (informal) and short bio of the artist.
Offering a high contrast Pop Art portrait depicting Elizabeth Taylor, done in multiple colors placed on heavy artists paper. The print shows early Pop Art and Modernism influence, as other portraits of the era. The paper is well preserved with some bends around the margins. On verso we find a publisher stamp and a reference mark under it. A very interesting find that will be a great addition to any art collection or interior.
Andy Warhol was a keen observer of contemporary American society in pursuit of celebrity and of the ways its images come to define reality. Andy Warhol is known as a painter of famous faces, from Liz and Marilyn and Jackie and Marlon to his own ever-changing self-portrait.
Warhol, like other Pop artists, used found printed images from newspapers, publicity stills, and advertisements as his subject matter; he adopted silkscreening, a technique of mass reproduction, as his medium.
The present work depicts the hugely successful actress, Elizabeth Taylor. Warhol first painted her portrait in 1963 when she was at the height of her career. In this portrait Warhol used a publicity photograph for Taylor’s film ‘Butterfly 8’ as the basis for the screenprint.
Elizabeth Taylor defined what it was to be the ultimate star: a cultural phenomenon that was no longer confined to the woman alone but known to the world simply as Liz. The definitive screen icon whose legend already reverberated across the globe, she personified an entire era of style and glamour. Onscreen she had mesmerized, seduced, shocked and inspired millions in various roles as devastating femme fatale; irresistible other woman; suspicious wife; and omnipotent empress, befittingly queen of all she surveyed.
