Located in the sprawling Raadhuisstraat hotel complex in the heart of Amsterdam, the tiny Hotel de Westertoren provides eight basic rooms at Cheapo rates.

Yes, the Hotel de Westertoren could use some fresh carpet, new wallpaper and a general freshening up. But, at least the rooms are clean and comfy, if a bit small. All are equipped with a television, minibar, safe, and coffee and tea kettle.

All rooms have a private shower, but some share toilets in the hallway.

A continental breakfast (including cheeses and meats) is brought to your room every morning and is included in the room rate. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Note that the hotel has no elevator and, like Hotel Nadia (which is housed in the same building and has a bit more personality), has almost laughably steep stairs. Hey, it’s good for the glutes.

Grachtengordel West

Grachtengordel West, also called the "Western Canal Ring," is an expansive area in the center of town, near Dam Square and the Old Center. The neighborhood is home to gorgeous 17th-century canal houses, along with some of the city's most interesting sights, including the Westermarkt, the Homomonument, the Westerkerk (Amsterdam's grandest church and the final resting place of Rembrandt) and Anne Frank's House.

Sleeping in the Western Canal Ring is, in our opinion, a breeze, as it's a quick stroll (or an even quicker tram ride), to the train station and most of the city's main tourist attractions. It's also quite lovely and romantic, lined with canals, floating houseboats, and, generally speaking, not popular with roving stag parties.
