Discover the Nausori Highlands

Nadi, Denarau and Wailoaloa provides travellers with the perfect opportunity to relax by the ocean, but if you leave Viti Levu’s beaches behind, you can discover a rugged interior of rolling hills, river valleys, forests and volcanic peaks, joined together with tiny villages bursting with tradition and custom.

Nadi

Towering over Fiji’s gateway town of Nadi, the peaks of Koromba to the South and Koronayitu to the North, form part of the dramatic Nausori Highlands. The stunning mountain range provides travellers with spectacular walking, trekking and off-roading excursion opportunities, and taking in the little villages along the way to learn about the real Fiji, beyond the palm-tree laced beaches. Although on a clear day you can still see the beaches, with sensational views over Viti Levu, the Mamanuca Islands and all the way to the Yasawa Islands.

Depending on the season, the Nausori Highlands will either offer golden valleys and hills, or lush green landscapes.

Nausori Highland

There are various hikes to viewpoints and waterfalls but the best way to explore is with a local guide or via Talanoa Treks, which offer a range of itineraries over a few days, including traditional homestays.

For a taste of the Nausori Highlands without committing to a multi-day trek with overnight stays, you can still enjoy the scenery on a one-day tour with Taster tours to the Valley of a Thousand Hills. You’ll visit an authentic Fijian village and local boarding school, enjoy some kava and a traditional lunch, before cooling down for a swim at one of the waterfalls, before heading back to town.

Hot Tips:

  • Pack accordingly: the trails often follow old well-worn paths between villages and at times these may be muddy, so a certain level of fitness is required as is an appropriate wardrobe and hiking boots.
  • Remember the essentials: sunscreen, hats and lightweight clothing is best for a multi-day excursion in the sunshine. Also bring electrolytes for replenishment.
