The castle of Fort la Latte, also called castle of Roche Goyon, in reference to the lord who decided of its construction, is located on a rocky cape of the coast of Côtes-d'Armor, in Brittany, on the territory of the commune of Plévenon.
Bordered by cliffs that protected it from possible maritime invasions, the castle is difficult to access even from the inland, this location having justified the place of its edification. From the site, however, the panoramic view can observe the Channel, the Emerald Coast and the bay of Saint-Malo.
Facing Cape Fréhel, Fort la Latte was built mainly with materials from the surrounding region: pink sandstone, granite, wood...
Its construction began in 1340 under the order of Étienne Gouyon, lord of Matignon and the dungeon was built around 1365. Besieged by Du Guesclin in 1379, the castle is still attacked during the wars of religion in the sixteenth century. A strategic point between the axes connecting Saint-Malo, Normandy and the Channel Islands, the site is again considered major under Louis XIV and bastions are then built along the ramparts.
During the nineteenth century, the military utility of the castle is considered less relevant and Fort de Latte was sold to private owners in 1892. One of them, Frédéric Joüon des Longrais, initiates in 1931 a restoration campaign complete that lasts more than 20 years.
Every year, during the winter season, new restorations are undertaken.
The ensemble is now open to the public who discover, in an exceptional natural setting, a vast work with two vocations: a residential castle and its outbuildings and of course a defensive enclosure that summarizes several centuries of history of the military architecture (ramparts, bastions, dungeons, drawbridges, guns, water cisterns for besieged soldiers...). A chapel and a medieval garden are also located in this citadel.
Listed monument since 1925, Fort de Latte is open almost all year round and hosts the second weekend of July medieval festivals attracting a large audience.
Open every day from April to the end of October and during the first week of January and from mid-February to mid-March in the afternoon, from mid-March to the end of March on the weekends, then weekends until December and every day during school holidays.
