Hoping for a sun-kissed glow? Slather on a top-tested sunscreen (we recommend at least SPF 30), shield your scalp and hair from the sun, and definitely skip the tanning bed — the healthiest way to achieve a bronzed look is by applying applying self-tanner. You may be familiar with tanning mousses or gradual tan lotions, but there's a newer version of the at-home tan that should be on your radar.

Self-tanning drops are innovative because they're a concentrated form of self-tanner, making your self-tanning journey ultra-customizable. They're easy to apply — you can mix however many drops you want (most recommend somewhere in between one and 12) into your favorite face cream, body lotion or SPF — the more drops, the darker your tan will be — or you can apply directly to skin for the ultimate bronzed appearance.

To find the best self tanners (including tanning drops), the Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab regularly tests the best self-tanning products from both high-end and drugstore products, in a wide range of formulas. In our last self-tanner test, we sent products to 218 women who used the tanners to reach their desired color, observe how the tan faded, and rank 10 products based on performance, ease of use, and overall satisfaction, keeping things likes streaks and depth of color in mind.

Keep reading for the best self-tanning drops that can be flawlessly added to any routine for a customizable glow, tested by the Beauty Lab or vetted by avid online reviewers and our beauty editors:

Pros
  • Customizable tan
  • No smell
  • No transfer
  • Natural-looking tan
Cons

These self-tanning drops are a breeze to incorporate into your routine. Designed to be added into your skincare, they're as customizable as it gets — you can add three drops to your lotion for a subtle, radiant glow, and up to 12 if you're aiming for a deep bronze. While we haven't tested this formulation in the Lab, reviewers are obsessed. "This stuff is the bomb," raves one. "Does not smell at all. Leaves no residue on clothing, doesn’t stain hands if you wash right away after application, gives you all the glow without any of the orange."

    Pros
    • Customizable tan
    • Great scent
    • Budget-friendly
    Cons

The drugstore brand known for its gradual tanning lotion (a winner in our self-tanner test!) also makes tanning drops that can be added to any skincare for a more customizable glow. Derived from natural sugars, this serum smells like coconuts — it will instantly transport your mind to the tropics. Like many tanning drops, the more drops you use, the deeper your tan will be. "It did not turn me orange, nor did it irritate my skin," one reviewer says. "I just mixed the drops in my regular moisturizer, and the results were stunning."

      Pros
      • Absorbs quickly
      • Natural-looking tan
      Cons
      • Can look orange if used on its own

Ever wish your face serum did double-duty as a self-tanner? This serum does just that. GH Beauty Lab testers loved how versatile it was. "It absorbed quickly into my skin without feeling oily," one tester said. "It was very thin so I could easily mix it with moisturizer. After using it in the morning, I noticed my face getting more tan as the day went on over the course of one day!" This serum can be used alone or mixed into skincare, but our testers say it works better when it's mixed in.

      Cons

From the brand that aced our self-tanner test, this formulation is specifically made for an all-over body tan (the brand also makes a face formula) to help you achieve a bronzed glow. These should be mixed in with your usual body moisturizer — two to six drops will do the trick. "I’ve tried everything on the market and nothing has been as easy and as pretty as this tan," one reviewer says. "It doesn’t smell when developing, doesn’t transfer, doesn’t fade quickly, doesn’t end up streaky and the bottle lasts a long time!"
