The longest running annual swamp soccer (football) tournament is the Swamp Soccer World Championships (Finland), held in Hyrynsalmi, Finland, since 2000.

For decades, elite Finnish cross-country skiers would visit the swamps to train during the summer months and in 1998 had the idea of combining swamp training with football (soccer) to create a new version of 'the beautiful game'. The first competition involved 13 teams and by the year 2000 the World Championships had been launched. These days the events are attended by nearly 200 teams from all across the world. Teams are made up of 6 players and games are played on 30 m x 60 m (98 ft x 196 ft) pitches.

The Championships are split into 5 disciplines: Mixed, Women’s, Men’s hobby, Men’s competition, and Masters of Swamp (Konkari).
