The highest village in Sardinia
Located on the Gennargentu Massif, 1000 metres above sea level, Fonni is the highest village in Sardinia. The summit of Monte Spada, which rises in the near distance, is always covered in snow during the winter season, making it the only place on the island with ski facilities.
Wandering through the streets of the village, you will come across buildings of great cultural and religious interest, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Martiri, built by Milanese craftsmen between 1702 and 1706, the Museum of Pastoral Culture, where you can relive aspects of Fonni’s farming and pastoral tradition, and the numerous murals that decorate the streets of the town depicting scenes of daily life.
Around Fonni there are numerous archaeological remains of ancient civilisations, such as the Nuraghi, stone constructions dating back to 1800-900 BC. The most representative site is in Madau, where you can admire the Tombs of the Giants, so called because of their monumental dimensions.
