A Local’s Guide to Thisted, Denmark | with Mille
The more I travel, the more I love my hometown— Albuquerque, New Mexico. And this has inspired me to start this series, the hometown series. I will be interviewing people from around the world and asking them about their personal connections to their hometowns.
Meet my friend, Mille Filtenborg Jensen. I met her in downtown Randers while on a wild hunt for plant-based protein powder! I was so excited when I found her in quite possibly the only store in our little town that has plant-based anything. She was behind the counter and helping me navigate the Danish products. Unlike some Danes, she was super pumped to speak English with me. She told me she had studied abroad in North Carolina, where my sister went to college!
I absolutely adore Mille. She is super adventurous and loves to be active, like me. We love to meet up for sports events, go on coffee dates, and we have a tentative plan to leave the country sometime in the near future. I love her healthy lifestyle, she motivates me to go plant-based!
Mille also inspires me because she is so independent and leads such an interesting life. She has a serious travel bug, if you check out her Instagram you'll see what I mean. She has lived and traveled to many exotic places.
In a few weeks, she heads to Nepal by herself for a month! How many 25-year-olds do that? She is so cool! I am super thankful to have met Mille and have her in my town.
Meet Mille

of Thisted, Denmark
"Hi! I am Mille. I moved to Randers three and a half years ago because of nursing school. This January I finished school, and have been working at the ICU since then. I love to stay active, go for long runs, do yoga and spend time with my friends and family. I grew up in Thisted, in Thy. This is in the northwestern part of Jutland, Denmark. Thisted is surrounded by water and blue skies and will always be the place I call home.
About Thisted
Mille says Thisted is definitely known for its outdoors. The city is placed right by the Limfjord which makes for an awesome place to go for a swim, kayak, paddleboard, or just enjoy the amazing views. Thisted has a population of 13,000 and has a nice small-town vibe where everybody knows everybody.
Most of the city centers around the harbor and waterfront, but extends into the forest and has quite a bit of surrounding agricultural. Mille says if you're in town, you have to stop by Thisted Bryghus, its local brewery well-known for its high-quality organic beer!
When Mille is gone, she misses being by the open water with amazing views, but mostly she misses her parents. They are still living there in her childhood home. She still lives close enough to take a weekend home every so often to visit her parents and her family golden retriever, Nicky! She says the older she gets, the more she appreciates the beautiful nature that surrounds Thisted.
Food
Thisted is definitely known for its fresh fish - lots of it! This region of Denmark has lots of fishing. Mille also says for some unknown reason, the town has many good pizza places. And if you are ever hungry in Thisted, she says to visit Café Baghuset on the main shopping street. It is an upscale cafe that has 4.8 stars on Google Review, and boasts traditional Danish foods as well as a nice mix of foods found around the world.

First Timers
Mille says first-timers absolutely have to visit the waterfront and do a water activity (in the warmer months). This area has great kayaking and swimming, and people can be found taking long walks on the beach. She says you should also take a tour of the local brewery, Thisted Bryghus.
People of Thisted
When asked why she loved the people in her city, Millie told me that she loves them because they are the people she grew up with and has known her entire life. In a small town, she has worked with some of them, played sports with, been to school with, or at least talked to.
It is the type of town where you always meet people you know walking down the street. In this small city, she says many people are outgoing and friendly.
Most Instagrammable Spots
When trying to get the perfect photo, Mille says you have to head down to the waterfront at sunrise! The still and peaceful morning makes for beautiful photos.
