For so long, I had an undercurrent of sadness running through me. Yes, I could be happy and I learned to mask the sadness as I grew in life. I didn’t know how to really feel many emotions. Anger was the exception. I would say I was slow to anger but when I reached a breaking point, it would explode out of me, followed by waves of guilt for how I overreacted. I didn’t know how much that sadness and anger was holding me back in life until I finally accepted a simple truth: that I am a transgender woman. Once I accepted myself, so much of me was unlocked. The sad undercurrent dissipated. I was angry far less often and hardly ever involved explosive outbursts. And I became truly happy, joyful even! With that joy and shift of emotions came other good changes. I learned that I am worthy and I learned how to love myself unconditionally. My relationships with my daughters significantly improved as I learned to better engage with them with empathy and become emotionally present for them. I found my people, first on social media and more recently in person. People who are like me or are committed allies and who accept me as I am! Professionally, I grew beyond what my job responsibilities were and took on stretch assignments that accelerated my career trajectory. I am not perfect but I love this version of me! #TransgenderAwarenessWeek #Empathy #PersonalGrowth Image description: Tamsyn is feeling joyful today!
