☀ What can grid operators do when there's too much sun for the grid to handle? ⚡
In 2023, Distribution System Operator Fluvius received more than 5,000 complaints of solar panels being ‘switched off’ because the grid lacked capacity on sunny days.
To limit this disruption, Fluvius, who is working closely with Stad Antwerpen and Stad Gent in COPPER, is leading the way with new measures to manage the lack of capacity.
These include:
🔌 Plans for thicker cables
📱 Tools to help consumers be aware of capacity limits
🗼 More distribution infrastructure
🔢 Data monitoring to analyse their capacity problems.
Measures like these will become increasingly common across Europe as local energy systems ramp up renewable production and consumption in the coming decade.
Fluvius have already committed €4bn to prepare their grid for the upcoming demands of renewables, electric cars and heat pumps. Across Europe, this transformation will cost around €375-425bn by 2030, according to Eurelectric and E.DSO.
As part of COPPER, frontrunner cities are working closely with their DSOs to plan for the demands of the energy transition, building Local Energy Action Plans (LEAPs) that will coordinate the growing local energy system at city level.
