Disaster Girl Turned Her Meme Into NFT Worth More Than Rs 3 Crore

Remember the “Disaster Girl”? The photo that was used in countless memes on Reddit and every social media website possible? Well, the original photo was sold as an NFT auction and made $500,000 or Rs 3,70,63,750 worth of Ether. The girl in the picture that went viral in 2005 is now a 21-year-old college student who probably never thought her picture would be worth so much money.

The viral image was captured by her father, David Roth, in their neighbourhood while watching local firefighters working. The picture was eventually entered in a contest and won. The photo was quickly noticed by the Internet and the meme of the “Disaster Girl” was born. Roth plans to use the money made from NFT for college and make donations to charity.

This is not the first time an old meme was sold for huge amounts of money. The artist behind the Nyan Cat sold the original picture as an NFT for $605,000 earlier this year. Even Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey sold his first-ever tweet for almost $3 million. If you weren’t aware, NFT has now become a method to make a vast amount of money. Even music producers and artists like Deadmau5, Grimes, 3Lau, Jacques Greene, Tory Lanez and Kings of Leon are selling their music as NFT.

NFT or non-fungible token is basically a unit stored on a blockchain that certifies items as digital assets that are unique and hence making them non-interchangeable. NFTs are mostly used to represent digital files such as images, audio, video and other forms of digital media. Access to the original file is not restricted to the buyer however NFTs are tracked on blockchains to provide the owner with proof of ownership that is not the same as obtaining copyright.
