The first two square dance lessons are free.

Claxton Country Squares, a western-style square dance club, offers a gathering place for regular square dances and also lessons for those desiring to learn. Square dancing is the official folk dance for the state of Tennessee.

The club's home location is in the Claxton Community Center, 1071 Edgemoor Road, beside the Claxton Community Park and near the Bull Run Fossil Plant.

This club was established in 1986, over 37 years ago, and has been an established landmark ever since.

"They are proud of their reputation of being the friendliest square dance club in the state of Tennessee, and regularly prove to their visitors they intend to keep that reputation intact," according to a news release.

They are also proud to be led by caller Mike Hoose, who is well known for his ability in calling square dance and also teaching those who wish to learn. He was born and raised in the Claxton area, and graduated from Clinton High School.

The club offers regular square dances on the first and fourth Saturday night of almost every month. These dances are from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The group offers square dance lessons beginning each year on the first Monday after Labor Day, that being Sept. 11 this year. Their first two classes are free and that would be Sept. 11 and 18 at 7 p.m. Following this, the lessons are $6 per dancer, with discounts offered for multiple family members.

"Everyone is encouraged to try it and see if it is for you. It is a very enjoyable and healthy activity for the entire family, young and old alike," the release stated. Easy step-by-step instructions are given and no experience is necessary.
