In the horizontal position 2x4 is plenty wide enough to hold a receiver and turntable with space to spare. On my unit, I've "hacked" it by removing one of the dividers between cubes to accommodate my receiver, tape deck and EQ (not used for EQ, just blinkenlights). My turntable(s) are on top with records in the side cubicles. My 2x4 Kallax is very, very sturdy in the horizontal position, even with one of the vertical supports relocated.
